the discussion about spike’s age…… uggh, does it really matter? i personally like how there is no real back-story that explains things like age or scootaloo because it gives everyone room to create cool headcannons/fanfics.
 
 
me? i think spike was not born when twi just started school….. they treat magic school like a university. i think twi was at least past 5th grade (or some level of education) and was smart enough to be put in university (much like that one episode of dexter’s laboratory where dexter goes straight to college for being smart). this gives reason to the idea that spike was born around the same times as the CMC’s. i hate the idea that they are all the exact same fucking age, though, so spike, scoots, sweetie belle, and applebloom gaps between their birthdays….. much like how fluttershy (cannon) is a year older than pinkie pie.

I would say it’s simply duress: Sudden shock, anxiety, think about it, randomly three girls (mears) are chasing you and you don’t know why. Understand?

If I were Spike, I’d choose Sweetie Belle Hoofs down.

~10 years after now the teenage CMC realize how Spike always treated Rarity while he had his crush on her (even choosing to be happy for her when she found a colt/mare of her own) and decide he is the perfect stallion/dragon and so rather then risk their friendships with each other tag team seduce him.  
I can see teen Spike getting his wings and Scootaloo enthusiastically volunteering to teach him to fly holding him close whispering instructions in his ear (Rainbow Dash’s lessons for Scootaloo probably involved less throat nibbling).  
Him working on the farm for some extra cash (or just to be a pal) and Applebloom complaining about how very hot she is and deciding to cool off by drenching herself with a strategically placed bucket.  
And Sweetie Belle decides subtlety is over rated invites Spike over to her house and asks “What do you think of the new lingerie Rarity made for me?” before pulling off her bath robe. “Oops silly me I must have forgot to put it on first!”

Yes, its all just speculation, but the problem with speculating that Spike is in the same age as the CMC is that there is no evidence to support it. The show, and the characters in it, treat Spike differently than them. He doesn’t go to school, he’s employed, he hangs out solely with the mane 6, and all the other points I’ve mentioned.
 
And to counter these points? ‘Maybe he’s home schooled, maybe he’s mature for his age’, and you’ll forgive me if I see no reason to consider possibilities based on nothing as being worth considering. I’m sorry, but not all speculation is created equal.

the ONLY character we know the approximate age of is that spike was born when twilight was just starting school. the other things are all just speculation, but I’d hazzard a guess that spike’s about thirteen to fifteen, and the CMC are about ten to thirteen.

Looking back on my last post, I don’t like the tone it has so I’d like to apologize.
 
My point is, and always has been, that the easy explanation to why Spike is treated radically different than the CMC is because he is significantly older, probably at about twice their age. He tends to act like a mid to late teenager while they act like elementary school children.
 
That is the simplest explanation. We can argue that Spike was raised differently, or is simply mature for his age, but there is no reason to create a complex answer to a simple problem, and there is a wealth of evidence in show to support this as being the most likely answer.
 
If you wish to think differently, that’s fine. But I see no more reason to give credence to the theory that he is in their age range than I do to believe in the theory that Celestia is secretly a tyrant.

Yes, it is all just speculation, but my speculation is based on things that have actually happened in the show. There is no evidence in the show to suggest that the cmc are his age or older. None. Speculation based on nothing, especially when there is ample evidence to the contrary, is not really worth consideration. I also know the Cakes are older than Pinkie even though its never been said specifically.

Just because he’s more mature doesn’t mean he’s many years older. You should know that just from observing people in real life. Living with Twilight could make him unusually mature and responsible for his age. The C.M.C. are old enough to run around town unsupervised, and they and their peers were allowed to run a school newspaper with no adult supervision. They could easily be Spike’s age, maybe even older. But really we don’t know how old any of them are. Everyone’s just speculating based on little clues, and it annoys me when people present their speculation as fact.

I’d disagree on your assessment of his personality, especially since the man 6 tend to act fairly childish themselves. And even if this wasn’t the case, he still acts far more mature than the CMC.

I’m pretty sure you can guess the age just by how they act; the CMC seem to be about ~8-9, with Spike about ~10-11, if you were to ask me. Not a significant difference.
 
I’d say Spike simply doesn’t go to the pony school because he’s not a pony and/or Twilight likely homeschools him. He’s nowhere near “working age” i.e. ~15-16+ just by his personality.
 
Of course, these are all human mental-age estimates, not actual dragon/equine age or whatever.

Yet pet sitting and being an assistant are both far more than the CMC have ever had. The cmc also trick and treat when he doesn’t, stay home when he goes with his friends, the mane 6 and not the other school age kids the cmc hang with, on adventures, and when he doesn’t go he stays by himself. We don’t know exact ages, but there is zero evidence to suggest they are in his age range, let alone older. Crack theories are still crack theories no matter how many people claim them to be true.
