Pride Month is almost over, but I made something just for the occasion before July arrives. Before My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic came to an end, we got to see some LGBTQ ponies! First, we have Scootaloo’s aunts: Aunt Holiday x Auntie Lofty! They were mentioned in the My Little Pony: Ponyville Mysteries series, made a physical appearance in the comic book version of the mini series, and finally appeared in the overall show (and with new designs). These were the first canon lesbian couple we ever got. Nod Whenever Scoot’s parents, Snap Shutters and Mane Allgood, were on their journey’s beyond Equestria, she would stay with her aunts, although they lived a few stops from Ponyville. When Scootaloo’s parents decided to bring their daughter with them and move to Sire Lanka, Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty decided to move to Ponyville and raise their niece, since they know that she and her Cutie Mark Crusader friends have a role in helping ponies discover the meaning of their marks. They are perhaps the best aunts in Ponyville!
And then there are our favorite background best friends: Lyra Heartstrings x Sweetie Drops (Bon Bon)! Lyra x BonBon PLZ Ever since they were introduced in the series, we always imagined them to be a couple, although I thought what they had was a womance (female version of bromance). In fanart and fanfic, they were almost always depicted as a lesbian couple. Although MLP:FIM gave us possible hints that they were each other’s very special someponies, throughout the entire series they were always seen as the tightest friends, perhaps as tight as the Goofy Gophers from Looney Tunes. But then, the last episode before the three-part series finale gave us what many LyraBon fans were hoping would be made canon - Lyra and Bon Bon proposed to each other! Then, in The Last Problem, a newspaper article revealed that they got married, and we see them in the future as a happy couple. As mentioned before, I was hoping that these two were just bros, in the female sense; there is such a thing as homosocial relationships. But whatever relationship they have, oh well.
I’m sure some of you would ask why I didn’t include Rainbow Dash and Applejack, especially since it’s speculated that they may be in a relationship too. I want to point out that even though Ashleigh Ball is the voice behind them, there was never any indication or hint that they would become a couple in the show (Gameloft doesn’t count). It’s up to the fans to decide. Plus, I have friends who have a thing for these awesome mares, and I don’t want to break their hearts.
To be honest, while I am pleased with how this turned out, I don’t feel great due to the fact that I had to borrow somebody else’s vector for this. Although I made Lyra and Bon Bon, I loved the vector of Holiday and Lofty cheezedoodle96 made. I tried to make an original arrangement, but it didn’t work. So I guess I’m just stuck with the pre-made vector. I did however tweak one of Lofty’s eyelashes; it wasn’t black. Sorry if you don’t approve of this, Cheezedoodle.

Happy Pride Month again everybody!!!
Why?
They got married quickly too, having gotten Mare’s Day presents right in front of each other in Season 7.
THIS⤵️!!… is where the representation started
(NOT canon to the FiM series, FYI)
And yeah, they were pretty obvious for background characters.
“I have friends who have a thing for these awesome mares, and I don’t want to break their hearts.” Again this is a pride image that is meant to be celebrating the gay couples in the show? It feels weird to choose to not show any appreciation for them, because of your waifu friends who are just going through a phase in their life. Unless this image was done with the intention of them being the main viewers? It would make sense then.
But if you head on over to the EQG side of things you might be happy to know that there are two gay couples there… Well 3 if we count the human Lyra and BonBon as a separate couple to the pony two. One of these couples is actually between two men. Although they’re super super backgroundy, they have been around for a while. I can’t remember their names though.
And huge shame that we never get much in the way of a hint on where Starlight ends up. Both Trixie and Sunburst work at the school with her, but that doesn’t narrow anything down. Truly the most ambiguous relationship.
I guess it just makes me feel a little sad to see a pride month image that makes it looks like this is all the representation we got, just these two. Just the poorly done aunts who were throwaway characters, and the couple the fandom basically demanded be gay. The show is a bit more progressive than that… But maybe also, not as progressive as I thought.
It’s still hard not to see the aunts as sisters with those similar designs.
