It’s not so much a societal convention as it is a necessity. Most guys hang a bit lower than that towel would keep decent, after all. Makes it mighty suspicious that he isn’t, come to think of it…

I’m a guy and I can wear it like that easy. All my towels have a width that do cover nips to above the knee.
 
If I wear it waist down (pecs and belly button exposed and all) it always goes way below my knees, and I’m short. 5’6”

That actually…got me thinking.
 
Why is a towel only so wide that it only covers just above the nipple to below the crotch?  
Which means for men, it always goes below the knee.
 
Also why is towel too small for men when their thigh is exposed?
