The ruined castle was the previous capital of Equestria and was damaged in the battle between Celestia and Nightmare Moon. Afterwards Celestia decided to relocate to Canterlot because the old castle reminded her too much of Luna. The magical fallout from their battle made the Everfree difficult to control.
 
That’s my headcanon, anyway.

I want to know how the royal castle got in to the Everfree Forest. Was it previously not, and the Forest expanded, perhaps when Luna left? (And if so, will the Everfree Forest be retreating again now that she’s back?) Or was it always there, and speaking to the Princesses used to involve a perilous quest into the wilds?

One has to wonder the history behind the castle and what secrets they’d uncover when rebuilding
