Celestia is only shown with pink hair in simplistic ilustrations in an in-universe book. That doesn’t mean she actually had pink hair in the past. That same books shows her with pink hair even at the moment she banished Nightmare Moon, and we know from season 4 that that wasn’t the case.

S01E01 of Friendship Is Magic hinted at this through the images of the book Twilight Sparkle was reading. Fans created the headcanon that Celestia’s mane and tail were pink when she was younger and eventually the folks at IDW more or less made it official in the Legends of Magic comic series (however, younger Celestia in this comic also had blue and green tips in her mane and tail). Celestia and Luna’s past is quite confusing, so it’s pretty much impossible to do anything about it without ignoring something already established.

Although it seems they’re basing Celestia on her comic counterpart since her mane and tail were supposed to be pink. But I guess they need to make it clear it’s them.

First of all, brace yourselves for the nitpicky and arrogant bronies who don’t like G5 (mainly when it comes to referencing G4) and think their opinions about it are universal. Second, Celestia and Luna look so adorable! The production staff even remembered Luna’s season 1 design.
