Various fanfics use the name “Equis”, which I’m quite fond of. I don’t see why they’d call it Earth since all the rest of their place names are different.

I would assume they’d call it earth, because it is their home world. Earth is what you call your native planet. Ours is Terra; its where we get words like terrestrial, meaning of our home world.

I’d say Equestria is, at most, the size of the USA. It certainly doesn’t take up the majority of the planet, or even the majority of a continent.

Equestria (whether you call it the land or the planet) seems to be incredibly small for something like that.
 
I’d imagine it as an island with unexplored territory somewhere else.
