I’d considered the F4U-4 Variant Better then the P-51D. (The P-51H isn’t even the same airplane frankly and never saw action, if you want to use that a fairer comparison would be the shortly post war F4U-5). Compared to a P-51D The F4U-4 roughly speaking:
-Climbed Better
-Was Faster at pretty much any given altitude, and it also accelerated better
-Was about as to a bit more maneuverable in both roll and turn rate (As speeds got slower though the F4U pulls increasingly ahead due to extremely effective flaps, and at the very bottom end it has a significantly slower stall speed)
-Had a superior payload carrying capacity then the P-51 (There are reports of F4U getting airborne with up to 6,000 pounds of ordnance!)
-Some of the aircraft carried four 20mm cannons in place of machine guns giving them much superior firepower
-It was generally agreed to be easier to fly to the edge, with a stronger stall warning and less aggressive departure if pushed to far. The P-51 actually had several significant vices when near it’s limits. (liked to flip on it’s back, didn’t warn of impending stalls well, could spin easily with incorrect power use)
-It could operate from carriers, kind of a duh thing, but that kind of versatility is pretty damn useful.

The P-51 meanwhile:
-Had better range, although the corsair was by no means short ranged
-Accelerated better in dives although top end diving speed was a wash.

Durability is hard to gauge the Corsair was a radial, but some data indicates it’s oil cooler presented a vulnerability to ground fire compared to other radial aircraft (vulnerability air to air is less clear). Still it’s quite unlikely that this issue was more of a problem then the P-51s own enormously vulnerable cooling system which was considerably larger.

Overall I’ve always preferred the F4U in flight sims, I’ve never really clicked with the P-51 and have never been very found of it.
