Well, these shows are mainly targeted at a young female demographic, so it makes sense that the girls would be a step above the guys in a few areas. Plus its not like the guys are portrayed as completely incompetent morons.

we are forgetting about the male ponies who are in the show that are respectable IE; royal guards, big mac who is displayed as the strong silent type, shining armour, and apparently in canterlot there seems to be less of an unequal gender ratio.  
perhaps ponyville just doesn’t have that many males in its population?

Agreed, and on the LPS side, Russell, Sunil, and Vinnie are all very enjoyable, as if Blythe’s dad, and they’re all positive overall.

I dunno, I find Shining Armor, Carrot Cake, Big Mac, Fancy Pants, Pipsqueak, Filthy Rich, and Starswirl are held in good regard and positive male characters.
 
Snips and Snails are boys; they fuck shit up, kinda slow, but it’s funny and they never mean any malicious intent.
 
Spike, well, he was a bit of a butt monkey in S1, but that title went to Rainbow Dash in S2. As of now, he’s growing up and trying to find himself. It can get bumpy, and he does get frustrated by it, but he’s roughly that age where things like what he’s experiencing happens.
