If it’s any consolation, I am on your side in this case.  
I think they’re gonna pull an “Echanted” and have the sidekick have to deal with losing his voice.  
I’m hoping for some good physical body language based comedy at the least.

I know of the fan comic you speak of (at least I think I do). It’s by Mauroz.

They did hint at fighting and action, though. The commercials showed the ponies fighting all of their “copies.” We had no idea just how awesome it was going to be, but they weren’t hiding that there was going to be action in the episode. EQG looks like it is probably going to be mostly drama-focused, which is kind of ironic seeing as it’s causing so much drama in the fandom.

EQG could have been a neat concept if they had gone with Faust’s original idea of a “magical girl” cartoon. Have the girls fight in battles using their magical pony powers and awesome shit like that. I have a feeling that we aren’t going to get that though, or else they would have at least shown a glimpse of it in the trailer.
 
Oh well, there’s at least that one fan comic that ran with the Magical Girl concept (wish I could remember the name and artist, but I can’t). If you want to see high-school humanized FiM done right, that comic is probably about as close as you’ll get.

In case he does talk, he could turn out to be some sort of pet advisor, just like Luna from Sailor Moon. She was basically a talking cat who said “do stuff”. Just because she didn’t fight doesn’t mean she wasn’t important. Okay, maybe Spike isn’t mature enough to to that directly, but who know how he might help.

Spike is the only male main character in the show, and they turned him into a feral animal sidekick.
 
The moral of EQG: boys are dogs and the fate of the world depends on you becoming the prom queen.

I’d refer to the Autistic farmer who cow whispers, but I’m too tired to argue the inner workings of the domestic sentience… Also, I doubt that was a coherent thought. XD
