Whatever failures he had as a field commander (and because of that I personally think he was the very picture of incompetence), he was a very good organizer. He was the one who organized the Army of the Potomac into what it was. I think he would have been far more successful, however, if he had been put in charge of organization and supplies and left the field command to Grant.

I’m certainly no fan of the North. But, I can’t help thinking that Lincoln would have been happier to have had Trixie leading the Army of the Potomac. Rather then this Guy who basically wasted the Three years of the War against General Robert E. Lee.

The only thing surprising about him was that he was allowed to hold onto his post as long as he did.
