@Psyga315
Well, since this has been brought up again…
Remember, the Mane 6 in “Games Ponies Play” weren’t there on a pleasure trip; their purpose was to schmooze Ms. Harshwhinny and sway her in favor of choosing the Crystal Empire for the Equestrian Games. Given Spike’s penchant for embarrassingly honest snark, having him along would have seemed an unnecessary risk. (It also kept him from also carrying an idiot ball for half of one of the weakest episodes (IMHO) of the show’s run to date.)
A much more pointed question would be why Spike didn’t come along in “Sweet and Elite”; that was almost the only flaw in what was an otherwise wonderful episode, but even back then it annoyed me.
@HighRollerHydra
That would have worked if Sombra was actually constantly attacking, but they had at least a moment to rest up and do stuff before Sombra could try and break through the shield.
@ObtuseAngle
I enjoyed Equestria Games, too. It was a great Spike episode, but I was disappointed in the overall lack of the Equestria Games themselves.
@Background Pony Number 17
The equestrian games were downright terrible. Aside form the fact that they built it up as a grand event, we see NOTHING actually happen, just Spike set out in front of a firing squad forced to sing a song that he doesn’t know the lyrics to.
I don’t know of anyone who thought that cringefest was funny.
Since it hasn’t been posted here yet, I’ll just mention the whole ‘Spike At Your Service’ fiasco. I’m sure by now y’all know that it was originally supposed to be a Spike/Rarity episode. However, Rarity was OOC and she was also mean to Spike. Therefore, the episode was completely rewritten and Applejack was featured as the co-star instead.
Between Spike being a clumsy oaf, and Rarity being a bitch, the episode was doomed to suck, no matter what happened. Hopefully, season 4 give these characters better treatment.
They didn’t invite him and that’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter if he was going to contribute anything or not, he is supposed to be the “hero” that saved the Crystal Empire, Cadance should have invited him out of simple gratitude. It would have been different if Cadance invited him but he just declined.
Regarding the episodes, well Spike at your service has been panned by the majority of the fandom, and I agree with them, that episode just sucked. Just for sidekicks, I agree that had great humor, in fact I laughed a lot, but in the end Spike’s characterization was lacking and it really brought down the episode for me.
I thought we were talking about the show not the comics :P
@dreaper
Again with the not inviting thing, look what the heck would’ve Spike done if he went back anyway? They were getting ready for a competition, not throwing a parade in his honor, if he went he wouldn’t have contributed anything.
Okay, Spike at your Service in my honest opinion was just “meh”, it’s not terrible to me it’s just kinda there. And Just for Sidekicks I thought was hilarious, and did a fair job with everyone’s character, (Also Spike helped save the day again in the comics.)
But yeah, it’s a shame Rarity didn’t get a full episode this past season.
Yeah, he saved the Crystal Empire, yet his heroics were so massively downplayed to the point Cadance didn’t invite him back.
He got two episodes, but Spike at your service ended up being as a contestant for the worst season 3 episode award, and Just for sidekicks was also so underwhelming and did not improve that much Spike’s character (It was better than the other one though)
That said, having no Rarity episode in season 3 was a real bummer.

Personally, I thought it was one of the best episodes of the season.
But even though we both call ourselves fans of Spike, I doubt we’d see eye-to-eye on just about anything involving him.
Quite a few seem to think it was.
Some even think that it as very brave of him.
I don’t get these peoples’ stances much.

I seem to recall that he was about to drool…also, Sombra was attacking, so it’s hard to focus on hunger.
Well, all in the past.
And yet his humanitarian kick didn’t happen in the empire.
So… Cadance is racist?

Wings.
A pair of what?
Greedy bitch.
“It would have been different if Cadance invited him but he just declined.”
And given how he was bummed about it, he didn’t.

Or as I and some other guys like to call it, thecharacter A-bomb.

And the princess didn’t bother to invite him back.
Hey, now he can sleep and play all day if he wants to. Not like it’s permanent, might as well enjoy the fun.
As long as he can speak to Twilight, I don’t see the issue.
And yet he gets turned into a dog in the very first FIM movie…….yep
