And let’s not forget that Cadance herself played a very significant role in their liberation, holding Sombra at bay and uniting them for the final stand that ended his tyranny once and for all. If I were a crystal pony, she’d have my vote.

Well, Equestria did liberate the crystal ponies from a tyrannical dictator. To not fill the power vacuum would’ve just been irresponsible. Maybe after seeing Celestia and Luna the crystal ponies wanted these glorious saviors to rule them.
 
Or, closer to canon, Cadence became ruler because they simply didn’t have the willpower to govern themselves (see: their depressed state), and if everyone’s happy and is benefiting, then where’s the issue? Not to mention she has the Crystal Empire’s chief artifact that keeps the Empire alive as her cutie mark. And when they saw her restore the artifact, and her cutie mark match, they readily accepted her. ‘twould be racist to reject her just because she’s not a crystal pony.
 
And plus, I’ve seen it implied someplace that she’s like the modern incarnation of their ancient ruler. For one, the pony shouted, “Behold! The Crystal Princess!” ^source , which not only showed a sort of acceptance of her as their princess, but seemed to indicate that she had some kind of prophetic fore-ordination or something. The headcanon I’ve seen that makes the most sense is that she’s like a re-incarnation sort of of the previous princess that used to rule before Sombra did, because it’s a magical world where that kind of thing can happen.

Whoever came up with the ‘flat-tone pony’s burden’ tag is a genius!

I think there is. Because the alternative is that the city Empire is just an Equestrian puppet state.

I don’t know if the recent Crystal Heart Spell book is taken as canonical, but I had hoped Cadance at least had some ancestral link to the Crystal Empire.
 
Maybe down the road, but I’m not holding my breath.
