Cyberpunk is generally more intensive. I’d say that a fitting description of cyberpunk is “Drugs, sex, cyberdecks” (to keep it rhyming. And probably you should add a “cyber” prefix to “sex” ;) )
And about the displays; “high” cyberpunk gets rid of large amount of displays leaving only a few in favor of “jacking in”

Dieselpunk is pretty freaking nice from the standpoint of being tied into steampunk, but it’s own genre as well. It’s more focused on a retro future 50’s, kinda like the Fallout franchise is with Fallout 3, NV, and 4. Cyberpunk however, it’s a bit more intensive for future/space. Personally I wouldn’t mind having 9 monitors running, all with a blue-blue-green EL light rope around each of them, and having animated displays showing info that isn’t tied to anything.

Cyberpunk would be more biased for LED’s and flexible EL lights, and a ton of displays that are usually LCD/OLED.

Steampunk would be more biased for this full

This would be more what you are talking about, which is dieselpunk full

As far as what I’ve mentioned, I’d rather go with just a brushed steel and black painted chassis/frame and call it good, something 70’s-80’s ish.

No, I didn’t mean steampunk style. More like something between cyber and steam punk - imagine something like this, a wooden frame with brass parts, visible tubes, these two oscilloscopes - not yet cyber, nor steam anymore

Unfortunately, I haven’t ever done anything like this, though there are plenty of real world devices that do utilize some of said features, though usually between the 1950’s and 1960’s before transistors have taken their place. A steampunk system would be an excellent idea, though would take a lot more time if one were to give it working gears on the face frame.

I have to admit that, this sounds very interesting.
As for now, my both experience and resources are too low to attempt to do anything like that, but maybe within a couple of years I’ll have both. And who knows what then…
Not to mention that, if there was a good casing it’d look like the “missing link” between steampunk an cyberpunk.

Have you ever done something like this? If yes, I’d just love to see some photos, because it sounds simply amazing!

Nah, granted it gets pricy after a while, but you can take modern digital electronics and integrate the output signal from the device and have a full tube pre-amp, amp, and have them do anything else you’d need them to be. Like taking a bunch of Nixie’s and having them pose as a clock and/or tuner, tube pre-amp and amp, using backlit analog voltage or amperage meters (electronics attached removed of course, leaving only the meter) in tandem with LED bar graph VU meters (if you’re crazy and inventive enough, you could use light bulbs or small neon bulbs in place of LED’s), among whatever else your customized amp/radio could handle. Just mind the output circuitry since most older radios required a step-down transformer in order to not blow the speaker out. You could even go as far as going insane and having a single or double oscilloscope to monitor both output wave forms and anything else you could think of. Minding all of that, you might want to add in several cooling fans to keep the device cool because all those tubes and heat from the transformers are going to make it HOT, and I’m speaking from experience when my 1950’s RCA Victor/Victrola AM/FM radio still worked.

Whoa man, sounds crazy
I thought that tube-based electronics were just high-shelf audiophile stuff

Actually you have independent persons making their own electron tubes for various purposes, most notably the Nixie tube clocks. Tube-based electronics are making a come back too with some popular music creation and MIDI devices hosting a tube or two for filtering and other effects. On top of all the tube electronics of the past out there, radios, and other low wattage devices are coming back as well, just a matter of time before someone gets the crazy idea to make a LCD/LED TV driven entirely off of VTL.

Most of the tubes that I got came from CB radios, CB radio signal boosters, TV’s, oscilloscopes, and standard radios. I could make a computer but the electrical draw and heat from that would be far too great. I would likely stick with making a communications radio and audio amplifiers. Who knows how many 12AX/AU7’s I have in my box-o-tubes.

I always found transformers oddly mechanical. Make a bunch of loops of wire and another bunch of more loops, and you’ve got it. I’m so used to electronic parts working because they’re connected together, and transformer is two loops close enough to pass energy, but not touching. (I know, EM fields and stuff make it work.)

The tube-based scopes trade some precision and features for straight-forward use and ruggedness. Even the ones that were solid-state with the CRT seemed to be the go-to for training.

About the image - looks like he suscribes to the same jumper-wire method as me. Cut a length and use it, don’t worry if it’s too long.

Not only input overvoltage is less dangerous to them, but also most of the other things dangerous to electronics such as strong electromagnetic impulses or simply aging. Although, they DO NOT like being dropped

That oscilloscope is extremely likely electron tube controlled. I had one several years ago and those things are HEAVY! Too bad I had to trash it after the protective capacitor leaked and the chassis started to zap me. But yes, those tube based ones are serious business if built right and are far less prone to being destroyed by over input voltage than the newer IC/MOSFET driven ones.

I…I don’t quite understand what he’s going to achieve.
Electric parts which he have are simple; some resistors, some capacitors and wires. And something on the circuit board I don’t recognize(perhaps battery?).

However the oscilloscope in background seems like serious stuff, although he seems to be using paper for project - and today, “serious stuff” is designed with computer software - like Micro-Cap
