There’s also Sombra, a unicorn so strong he enslaved an empire by himself and required both princesses to put him down, and even then he still had enough magic power to place a one-thousand year curse on an entire country that the princesses were unable to do anything about, and lived on in ghost form, and Discord, who is the single most powerful character on the show. Sombra never had friends as far as we know, and Discord only recently acquired one. So far Twilight has yet to show the magic power to top either character on her own.

Show canon is that ordinary unicorns dont have more than one or two spells. Trixie has a cutie mark in magic and lots of spells. She is de facto one of the most skilled magic users, because there are barely any magic users at all.
 
Although i havent seen the movie, and have no interest in it, so ive no idea what Sunset has or does.

Well,I don’t remember other unicorns capable to do other things than telekinesis,making a flashlight with their horns (or magic linked to their special talents,but of could we wouldn’t know every unicorn especial talent).
 
Putting aside Celestia,Luna and Twilight,Trixie and Sunset (to an extent) are the only unicorns who seem to do “more stuff”,to put that way.
 
Of course fanfictions exaggerate things,but is actually something we could see in in the show.

You know what would be great? If a character believed in friednship but outright said that “magic” had absolutely nothing to do with it.
 
And he/she made Twi lose her shit when she heard it.

This does raise the good point of what the fuck Sparkle.
 
Magic is pretty clearly meant to be a scientific discipline, with studies and books and stuff. So Twilight getting ahead because of friendship doesnt make much sense. Itd be like if a chef was told that the reason his casserole failed was because he needed more friendship. It just doesnt make any sense.
 
Despite the whole magic = friendship thing, well.. magic doesnt actually equal friendship.
 
Hell, two of the most skilled magic users of this world, Luna and Trixie, have no friends whatsoever.
 
But then we already know that the writers have no idea what his spell actually did, and Twilight basically just gets ruined by being handed victory instead of achieving it by her own merits.
