I’ve got well over 1000 hours into DS2.
And since I got the first one recently, about 200 into that.
Sweet! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve died to that asshole in my first playthrough. Those fireball things pack a massive punch!
It completely blocks fire damage, save the constant AOE of the smelter demon, so yes.

Interesting… Would that shield help against those Lizerds that shoo- Err, spit, fireballs? In the Cardinal Tower area?
Indeed it is. But go through the doors of pharros and you can grab a shield that’s PERFECT for dealing with the smelter demon. The Gyrm Greatshield is on par with havel’s for stability, and along with a 100% Physical block, it also blocks ALL fire damage.
Yeah, I grabbed that. It’s awesome.
If you want to beat the consistently, beat the old dragonslayer and grab the tower shield in the chest past his fight area. It’s almost twice as heavy, but offers more stability and 100% physical block.
Wow… I thought it was ok considering I had bested them. I really moved around while fighting them, using the open space to my advantage.

Twin dragon greatshield is actually probably your worst option for that fight, save the bewitched greatshield or Rebel’s shield. You NEED 100% physical block against those guys, or you will die if they all gang up on you. that 5% damage that gets through is enough to turn the tide of the battle in their favor.
Well, I had the Twin Dragon greatshield. Plus I used my shortbow to snipe them a little bit.
This is why you either have adaptability leveled crazy high, or skip the area and snag havel’s greatshield first.
Well, yeah. I’m just saying that being out numbered drove me crazy.

Elsanna is far worse, especially when she summons Velstadt.
Oh yeah. I had a TON of trouble with the fucking Ruin sentinels. 3 v 1? Just a pain in my ass

Sir Allone was a PAIN!
He hits so damned hard it’s not even funny.
Holy syay, you only had 20? I just finished DS2 NG+ and still had over 50 deaths…
It’s possible to beat dark souls in a deathless run.
But so absurdly difficult that it makes insanity difficulty on ME3 look easy.
You just plain didn’t Fluttershy. You’re a nature freak. NOT A GAMER. AND ESPECIALLY NOT ONE OF THAT CALIBER!
Best I’ve done was 20 deaths, and I had to be painstakingly careful.
