I’ve found that “blame Monsanto” can be accurately applied to damn near any ecological ill in North America that doesn’t involve coal or oil; that company is one of the worst things the human race has ever produced.
 
Don’t forget climate change, though, that’s helping screw over all the milkweed butterflies too by altering the carbon dioxide concentration of their poisonous sap faster than the insects can evolve to adapt to it. The NorthernMexicofication of central and south Texas’s climate over the last fifty years is a main part of why our State Reptile is highly endangered as well; there used to be “horny toads” all over the place when I was a kid, and now we’re overrun with the damned harvester ants they used to eat because we’re a prime climate for the fire ants that eat horned lizard young.
