Though the reference does still exist. Thestrals were seen by Luna Lovegood. Luna’s thestrals… They share the leathery bat like wings, and though they are tamed down for the show, they do have reptilian features… Namely the draconic eye that is similar to dragons and Nightmare Moon’s eyes.
>calling bat ponies thestrals
be aware that thestrals were entirely invented by j. k. rowling (although the name is an old, obscure word meaning dark or dim) and that the bat ponies in mlp look essentially nothing like rowlings’ depiction of the thestrals. within her works, thestrals are “a breed of winged horses with a skeletal body, face with reptilian features, and wide, leathery wings that resemble a bat’s.” of these features, only the bat-like wings are shared with the bat ponies of mlp. and where the myth of the pegasus dates to around 750 bce, the thestral dates to 1999 ce. calling the bat ponies “thestrals” is disingenuous on grounds of biological design, and unusual in that thestrals are not actually an established mythological creature of the same degree of antiquity as the pegasus. it’s like making blue man group a race in a lord of the rings fanfiction.
Wouldn’t an inverted hippogriff be called a Hippalectryon? I mean, it’s cumbersome, but MLP:FiM has a lot of focus on Greek mythology. The greek name has gotta show up somewhere.
@Vree
I wonder if DHX can make a critter like that work in the show?
Otherwise I like most of the different creatures in OPs image, but shouldn’t unicorns and alicorns be in there too?
Couldn’t care less about the canids, but I like the sphinx idea there.
On perytons: there’s a good chance that they were invented by Jorge Luis Borges, for his book “Book of Imaginary Creatures” making them doubly imaginary.
Dunno if any canids aside from the Diamond Dogs might have a society as the series seems focused on hooved mammals. Interesting path to go down for griffons though. That might just be because I so totally wish hippogriffs are canon as it’d make sense to me (griffons and ponies exist, so put one with the other and they make a hippogriff)
The differences in body shapes between male and female diamond dogs is especially noted. Gives me ideas.
Neat styles, by the way.
Then someone have to invent better word than “bat ponies”.

then again, uploader warned about “rampant headcanon”.
I’ll need to change that then. I thought Thestral sounded familar to me. Thanks for catching that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippalectryon They’re an Ancient Greek monster like the Pegasus, Cerberus, Hydra, etc.
