Wait a minute. Before there was Celestia and Luna, there were other Alicorn Princesses of Equestria in the ancient past?
Alternate Proposal: They were rulers of the land where everypony lived before the founding of Equestria, and kept the peace between the three races. It was their disappearance which began the strife that tore the old country apart and brought the Windigoes.
Maybe they’re the ones who made Rainbow Power as a fail safe against Tirek or something.
Princess Gold Lily and Princess Sterling are historical princesses. They were born or promoted shortly after Luna’s banishment, and in those first years helped Celestia cope and govern Equestria.
