@EquestrianScholar
I’m referring to these people jumping up and roleplaying how they will “stand up for her”, and it’s a bit sad.
Still, yes, we know the couple ISN’T abusive, the above comic is a WHAT IF situation.
@Scrounge
Right, it should be strange and it should be unsettling, that’s the goal here and yes, the abusive one would be out of character, though NORMALLY it’s “anon”.
@Daneasaur
I’m not talking about flipping the hell out or whatever. I just can’t think of Shining hitting Cadance as being anything but sudden and out of character. She’s shocked and frightened, and she tries to push him away, but between the adrenaline and the sheer natural strength of an alicorn, she pushes harder than she meant to.
Anyhow, let me try again.
I’d find it odd if Cadance got anywhere near that point, especially since it seems way out of character for Shining to act like that towards her.
That’s why these things are faceless. Once you say who it is, the “they’d never do that” factor becomes a problem. Hence something in my brain trying (and failing) to sort it into something I might find even remotely plausible.
@Daneasaur
Please, don’t go throwing around the ‘white knight’ label. These charts are fine, and can be done very well, but if the characters shown are out of character then I argue that weakens it. Again, I cannot speak for Scrounge but my arguement is that Shining Armour would never say or do such things. He and Cadance are not in an abusive relationship and given how rare couples, especially married couples, are in MLP:FiM I personally would like to see them be shown in a healthy way.
@Scrounge
Something that many of the white knights in the comments here fail to understand is how an abusive relationship goes.
By this point in the relationship, the one that hurtful things is being done to has ALREADY taken severe abuse AND is mentally conditioned to be subservient to the other one in the relationship; they honestly believe that anything wrong IS their fault and are terrified of the relationship ending.
It’s all part of the conditioning.
The more heartrending a character’s reaction, the more ALIVE the creator of the chart managed to make them.
Having a character suddenly go bananas and attacking the faceless other character doesn’t work in this context as it means the creator of the chart honestly has no clue what these charts are about.
@EquestrianScholar
I can imagine him saying mean things to her, but only in extreme circumstances and he’d hate himself for it later.
Hitting her, however, would not only be out of character and unjustified, but also monumentally stupid. She’s an alicorn, after all. If she hits back, she could quite conceivably hurt him far more than she meant to.
It’s a good thing we all know this would be completely out of character for Shining Armor, that he would never actually do any of this. That is at least everything after the first, maybe second panel.
@IpersonallylikeCupcakes
I simply stated my views and disgust for this type of image, and how I choose to react to them. You had no actual argument, and simply attacked my opinion. Bravo.
By your own standard, your opinion is no more important either, but I acknowledge that you are certainly entitled to one.
So this means ww2 happened in equestria
Yeah, hard to look at without feeling emotional.
Yeah, it’s a hard one to look at.
You’re correct and i generally dislike certain depictions (spike is the most notorious for getting this treatment).
Well, when it’s “anon” it’s usually more believable. In Shining’s case, it wouldn’t just be unlikely, it’d border on a complete 180.

can i join in the killing too?
I know your post is so old, but it’s so right though. You explained everything spot-on.
I’m hoping this turns out to be a Changeling revenge plot with a fake Shining Armor, because I can’t think of another way to fix this.
If there’s something you don’t like and it has a specific tag, FILTER IT.
If I see you repeatedly bitching and/or downvoting something that’s completely avoidable, it’s not going to end well.

Some people like violent, hurtful things. Like reading a story about abuse. You may not like abuse, but it’s still an interesting read.
