@Millennial Dan
The validity of your point or whether I agree with it remains to be seen. None of that excuses putting words in my mouth, accusing me of an outragous stance I clearly did not have just because it was the direct opposite yours and it was conveniant for you. That’s dickish method of debating a point.

“I’m arguing that the Elements didn’t really do this; not quite, anyway. In Luna Eclipsed, Luna specifically said that Twilight and her friends had taken away her “dark powers.” The mixture of powerful Equestrian magic (which has always been an extension of the heart and soul of ponies) with a dark disposition was a transformation that enhanced her worst traits. What the Elements did was to revert that transformation. The monstrous forms of Luna and Sunset represent their ultimate slavery, as it were, to evil. What the Elements accomplished then was to set them free again.”

You are forgetting that this ‘dark transformation’ was fueled by the darkness within her own heart.

Yes, with her nature of being the ‘goddess of the night’, I agree her powers are more inclined toward evil transformations, this is very likely. However, I don’t know how many decades of feeling alone and ignored she had before she finally transformed, but that anger toward everything that ignored her was something massive and prominant in her soul that she accepted willingly.

If the elements of harmony destroying her transformation really didn’t remove the evil from her heart like you said, she would of become Princess Luna again but still been filled with that hate from right before her transformation, even if she was conflicted of losing her sense of self as Nightmare Moon.

That did not happen.

As it showed in Luna Eclispsed, she was still the same Luna from ages before Nightmare Moon, she was still effected by the same issues, but the darkness that welled up over decades was completely removed. She had the same triggers and same potential for darkness, but the years of darkness on her psyche that finally triggered it was not effecting her. She was basically Luna dealing with the same issues but having a second chance to not let them manifest into evil. While your argument could of been speculated for BEFORE the Nightmarity arc and the flashback of Princess Luna becoming Nightmare Moon in the show, none of your claims hold up right now.

Your explanation underscores the years of repression and anger Luna had to have before transforming, while trying to ignore the obvious life altering and almost unnatural power of the elements of harmony.

Sunset and Trixie had powers outside their souls ALTER their souls, increase corruption, so its only natural that they would reject something they didn’t like, especially if their soul was strong enough. This effect was far more prominant in Sunset, both due to the strength in Sunset’s soul and the dramatic nature of her ‘enhanced’ corruption. (Trixie’s soul has a lot of potential for strength, but she’s a work in progress, similar to Twilight but on the other side of the spectrum)

“ one thing you can’t deny is that the Elements’ purification does not involve ’absorbing’ anyone’s evil passions.”

You mean like Rarity?

The difference in the soul between the Luna just Un-Nightmare Mooned in the series premier and Luna Eclipsed compared to how she was immediately before she transformed 1000 years ago was so drastic, her darkness manifested physically into a formless entity known only as Nightmare Moon, Luna’s dark side manifest. Evil that is ‘chosen’ cannot be easily erased, so eventually she gathered her power and possessed Rarity, becoming an almagimation of both their dark sides, with Nightmare Moon dominant, known as Nightmare Rarity.

Sombra could of easily just used the elements of harmony to do the exact same thing to both the evil princesses, but eventually, too soon most likely, Evil Celestia’s soul would of become manifest, and things would of gotten really bad, really fast. Sombra instead removed the evil in their hearts, and instead of letting their evil roam free, immediately accepted becoming the vessels for their evil, just like Rarity did in her moment of weakness. Dark souls want to become complete, and they know Sombra can’t hold out their darkness forever. However, he’s going to last as long as he can.

In his eyes, better a rook be sacrificed to save the king and queen pieces. If they came back too soon, game over.

“and make it your own. “

Since when did Sombra make the darkness ‘his own’? All appearances looked like he was struggling with massive amounts of evil and aggression with none of his own personal context. A burden of some dark god or demon’s evil making one dangerous and aggressive, so they isolate themselves? I’ve seen that in many, many different fictions. This is hardly the most extreme example, especially considering either Equestria cannot survive without a Good celestia and a good Luna.

“The lame thing about alternate comic Luna is that while she regretted being caught up in her sister’s misdeeds, she never really did anything about it. And there wasn’t even any transformation affecting her or her sister’s actions, so the Elements wouldn’t have been much use for them.”

She was resisting her older sister’s influence on herself for 1000 years. Alt-Luna became a villain out of weakness of heart. Luna, repression. Alt-Celestia, ambition.

Trixie never had a transformation either, but the elements of harmony would of likely worked on changing her good…even if her corruption was all her own. If they had done that, however, she would likely have been haunted by her own nightmare in a semi-strong fashion, and it would be no guarantee she could hold it off. Thankfully, however, her corruption was amplified by something outside, and she quickly decided to slowly reject it.

The only difference between alt-Celestia and alt-Luna, with Luna, was that they had embraced the dark side of their psyche to their own identity. Luna couldn’t personally justify being Princess Luna with all the rage in her heart, so she tranformed into Nightmare Moon.

So does that mean reformed Alt-Luna and especially reformed Alt-Celestia have very weak identities right now? YES. Yes it does. But it was the only solution they had to save the other world, so hopefully the other good forces in Alt. Equestria (Discord, Trixie, Chrysalis) can aid their identities grow strong before Sombra can’t fight back any longer. If they can’t, they will likely need the other side’s help again. I agree its unorthodox, but most universes don’t rely on two sisters for their whole world to be stable.

“Anyway, I agree that it would have been nice if the show had given us a better look at how Luna really came to terms with the choices she made and own up to them, but alas, they never gave that process proper attention.”

I know. They gave all that duty to the comics, which I really dislike. Sunset got the full treatment, and I hope the theme eventually comes to the series, not just the movies or comics.

The fact that you don’t agree or don’t see what I’m getting at doesn’t mean it makes no sense. I’m focusing on this:

>removed all the evil in her heart
I’m arguing that the Elements didn’t really do this; not quite, anyway. What the Elements accomplished then was to set them free again. I say the Elements gave them their sanity back, because once they hit rock bottom, they pretty much hit the psycho button. Luna would ordinarily not attack her sister, but her bitterness twisted her character. What the Elements did was not to brainwash her, but to suppress the effects of warped magic. Same with Sunset.

And even if you disagree with that, one thing you can’t deny is that the Elements’ purification does not involve ‘absorbing’ anyone’s evil passions. What comic Sombra did just doesn’t add up. You can’t suck up a person’s soured will and make it your own. That’s a silly notion, and this comic is one of the very few pieces of fiction I’ve ever seen make such a dorky move.

The lame thing about alternate comic Luna is that while she regretted being caught up in her sister’s misdeeds, she never really did anything about it. And there wasn’t even any transformation affecting her or her sister’s actions, so the Elements wouldn’t have been much use for them. They probably would have done to them what they did to Discord, or something similar.

Anyway, I agree that it would have been nice if the show had given us a better look at how Luna really came to terms with the choices she made and own up to them, but alas, they never gave that process proper attention. Thankfully this did happen with Sunset.

@Starswirl
Since we don’t know much about Celestia or Luna themselves, its hard to say. Everyone in the alternate world was of a different alignment.

Comic!Luna and Comic!AltLuna we have a clear understanding of their motivations and backstories, heck, part of the reason for her fall that wasn’t outlined in the show, the stiffness of royal familiarity back then, and that was revealed in her comic with Pinkie. These are details the show could of easily done themselves if they were even SLIGHTLY interested in Luna compared to IDW.

Alt!Luna was a friendly but timid creature who was close to Sombra for many years, and when she turned darkside she had a very clear regret over trusting her overbearing evil sister. Alt!Luna’s character is very well established.

In their world, Celestia being evil is as common knowledge yet unknown as Celestia in our world being good. What do we know of Celestia before Discord? Basically nothing.

So if there is a weak link, its Alt!Celestia, but by Hasbro’s request. Since IDW can’t overstep grounds and make up certain backstories without DHX and Hasbro’s approval, let alone Celestia and Luna’s. Heck, Fiendship of Magic was created by Hasbro’s direction. What’s our Celestia’s reason for being a millenia-old peacekeeper? Who knows yet?

@CronoM
Question.

Was the reason alt!Celestia was evil to begin with ever explored? I don’t remember that, but maybe it was somewhere.

Because if it wasn’t, you have comic!Luna with a deep backstory, show!Luna also with a backstory and these two here… not.
CronoM

@Millennial Dan
I never said anything different about Luna so why are you saying you believe the opposite?

That doesn’t even make a lick of sense.

Of course Luna became evil out of choice, that goes without saying. I mean there are still a few guys who read IDW comics #5 and #6 without reading #7 or #8 that claim the opposite, but seriously.

Slowly turning evil does not imply insanity. It was a gradual process that eventually manifested itself in her willingly, albeit very extreme in its final release. And that’s the thing, its expected of the sisters because absolute power corrupts absolutely. They’re practical gods for their world. All Applebloom’s nightmare was going to do is give her nightmares…. She’s never going to go Anakin Skywalker on us. :/

Unlike Sunset Shimmer, where an outside force like the Element of Magic enhanced what bitterness and corruption was already there to the point where she was crying before and after the transformation, or Trixie, where something similar but not as dramatic happened, all the steps Luna took to let herself be evil and become Nightmare Moon were taken willingly. So what did the elements of harmony do?

It hit the reset button on her mind. No free will whatsoever in the show for her initial new choice. She basically got back to her mindset years before she became Nightmare Moon, removed all the evil in her heart, and got a chance to re-evaluate her life with knowledge of Nightmare Moon and her fate.

Alternate Luna turned darkside because she was weak-willed push-over, and her older sister’s will eventually won her over to join her. Was Alt Celestia ever good? Probably near the beginning, but it seems conquest has been her M.O. for a long time. The elements of harmony hit the reset button that far back as well.

( Problem is, I seriously doubt that Alt. Celestia has the will, or even the willingness, to reject her own evil if she’s confronted with it again. IF. She’s not our Luna. Alt. Luna had Sombra’s influence for the past 1000 years enough, so she can help, but Sombra’s keeping all that hatred tucked away with him as the vessel for good reason. Its not like Sombra can’t pretend it didn’t work before when it worked so well on our Luna.)

4 comics is hardly long enough for a full alternate universe, so its expected of any genre savvy person that the story wasn’t finished, because some people forgot there is an evil Sombra with dimensional magic on the loose. Other story elements are bound to appear. Like Episode 1 of the show, their fix was a band-aid solution. It was both Celestia and Luna’s responsibility to try being better sisters, even if free will wasn’t part of the initial equation, and they basically gave Luna a second lease on life. In their world, Celestia’s the weakest link, which will eventually be a problem. But like I said….Equestria was designed to lynchpin off the sisters from Episode 1.

Point is, the only difference between alternate Luna and Celestia, and our Luna, is our Luna’s evil was repressed to the breaking point while the alternates. All three chose evil willingly and was removed from the UNwillingly. Comic book Luna had the benefit of finally taking this second chance to confront her old evil, while her series counterpart just sits part of the background after the 30th episode….what a waste.

Luna’s not a main character in the show cause she’s never been made responsible for her actions, not directly. When Sunset and Trixie go through ‘corruption enhancing’ moments, those are a step in the right direction, and for Trixie, it was the comics who did the follow through, and for Sunset, it was the movie Rainbow Rocks.

The series however? Responsibility is as far removed from the series as possible when it comes to the elements of harmony. The new season, however, seems to trying to alter the theme against destiny and no free will.

My interpretation of what happened with Luna differs from yours. The way I see it, Luna chose to be evil. It happened by degrees, but she definitely took that path of her own free will. When her “dark powers” were taken away, she still could have clung to the darkness in her heart. The Elements didn’t change her into a different person, they just gave her back her sanity. Notice that Celestia still had to propose a renewal of their kinship; she didn’t assume everything was back to normal, because she knew the Elements are not meant for mindrape, contrary to popular belief.

The comics, in contrast, pretend that there is no such thing as true free will, and that the forces of the universe are what really control your behavior. I much prefer the notion of responsibility to that kind of thinking.

@Background Pony #4DAF
The issue with not being able to wrap this story up in a neat bow is that the show has revealed so little about Celestia and Luna in terms of true origins, that the mirror world doesn’t realistically have a way to replace them. Celestia and Luna were established lynchpins from Episode 1 of the show, and unless the world was DRASTICALLY different from our Equestria, they couldn’t have the present day unicorns control the sun and moon either.

Perhaps they should of waited until we knew more about the sisters? Maybe, but waiting for that could take ages, the show seems very uninterested in telling interesting backstories like that.
CronoM

@Millennial Dan
It is basically the same situation with Luna from the Series premier, which means somewhere along the road they will have to confront the evil Sombra accepted to hold (instead of unwillingly like Rarity), or succomb to it.

Except this was even more warranted since Celestia and Luna were lynchpins for Equestria in either world, so the kingdom was dying without the sisters both using their powers. It needed to be done even if it was on the border of brainwashing. Same with our Luna to a less necessary extent, but she eventually had to confront her own darkness in the comics, something the show NEVER did.

The show still runs on the mythos that choice and consequence are completely worthless compared to destiny, although in some Season 5 episodes, that’s starting to change it seems, where destiny is being villainized instead.
Background Pony #F6A1
…so, uh. What just happened here? He cast a spell that made evil!Celestia and evil!Luna just magically turn good, and absorbed their “evil” himself?

I… I have no words. Can’t we have an antagonist who isn’t just cackling like the Joker and doing it all “for the lulz” and who might possibly have humanly comprehensible motivations? This could have been so much more. We could have looked at “Evil Celestia” and “Evil Luna” and explored their personalities and their motivations and their histories, and explored how and why their world is so different from the Equestria we know despite having mostly the same people in it.

“they’re under an inexplicable evil curse of evil, here let me press the magic fix-it button” cheapens them as characters. It cheapens the whole thing, at least to me.

Of course, this is just my opinion and I should remember the MST3K Mantra at this point: it’s just a comic and I should just relax. I’m really disappointed, though. Not frothing with rage. Just disappointed.
Background Pony #D489
Not that big a fan of the comic, but I like the design of Ra Celestia and Artemis Luna.
