As for the fedora thing, I’d say the big difference is history.  
Fedoras were traditionally worn by working class Americans, while trilbies were traditionally worn by wealthy British men.

I personally think they’re different enough in form and construction to be different hats, but west of the Atlantic, the Trilby is generally considered a type of Fedora; there’s a hardcore Hat Guy here somewhere, he’ll explain it more passionately than I ever could if he ever shows up.
 
My point stands, though, since the kind of person who thinks “fedora” is shorthand for “woman-hating neckbearded basement-dweller” doesn’t bother to parse the difference between a Trilby and a more classically styled Fedora, and neither does the kind of person who thinks “feminist” is shorthand for “shrill man-hating harpy”. It’s like the way any firearm with a pistol grip and a detachable magazine gets called an “assault weapon” on the 24 news networks; people stop caring about definitions and terminology when there’s ideological hay to make.
