Even the synopsis of the story is sending shivers down my spine and making me feel down. If I read the story I would probably get fully depressed.
 
On another note, the enviroment reminds me of the novel and movie known as The Road, where an unnamed disaster kills all non-human life on Earth.

She figures in the story that whatever magic existed in Equestria before the cataclysm to manifest cutie marks died along with the princesses.

That is, in fact, Scootaloo. The premise of the story “End of Ponies” is that Scoots is the last surviving pony after a cataclysm shatters Equestria and kills the princesses. She’s in her early thirties when the story starts, her coat is faded and she shaves her mane and tail for both hygiene and to keep the wasteland’s other survivors from catching her.
