The name “Brad” comes from a series of parody videos, made back when the only information we had about Equestria Girls was a trademark and a leaked piece of concept art that everyone thought was fake. When Flash Sentry was revealed, first as another leak then as part of the official trailer, people started to associate the name with him, since both characters appeared to be defined entirely as “Twilight’s boyfriend.”

It’s pretty obvious why they didn’t advertise him as a toy or something: it’s because he is already being sold as SHINING ARMOR. Seriously, if you ask me, Flash Sentry was just their excuse to get crap past the radar with a fake Shining Armor and still do Sparklecest.
