Shining’s wife really knows how to sweep her stallion of his hooves, doesn’t she?

With the pony universe and all, with the pony princesses having the supreme power and authority, it has come to my attention that I absolutely adore role reversal relationships. It’s so cute~ :3

No, I’m not. Do I need to make another huge post explaining why that should be clear? Because there’s no real evidence for a matriarchy or patriarchy, and Equestria is clearly gender-egalitarian. There’s no indication whatsoever that one gender is advantaged or dominant, both genders have been portrayed as equally capable, and we’ve seen plenty of ponies of both genders in all sorts of positions, and there’s no gender roles being ‘enforced’, and so on. It’s clear that the genders are equal in Equestria, and that includes de jure and de facto.

I’ve seen that post, and many other arguments for similar headcanons, and I disagree with them. That one in particular is nothing but a bunch of assumptions, as well as taking a very liberal approach with interpreting character interactions to try and support those assumptions, often throwing context or the nature of certain characters, and other important little tidbits out of the window.

He’s also basing his argument on the notion that the gender ratio in unequal, in which he later decided was not the case himself. He’s ultimately interested in portraying MLP as similar to horses, and while I disagree, given that there isn’t much to compare other than both being equines, once he realized that real horses have a close to equal birth ratio, and that assertions to the contrary were a myth, he changed his mind on that headcanon.

I myself think the uneven ratio is simply a result of DHX not putting enough effort into their background pony crowds, especially given the clones that ruin any chance of anybody taking a census from such crowds.

Again, I’ve heard many arguments, and I hold my position that there is far, far more evidence for a gender-egalitarian society. The simple fact of the matter is that again, there is literally no indication in the canon that one gender is advantaged over the other, socially or economically. I still concede that you can technically call their government a matriarchy, at least of the top levels, but I’ve taken a lot of things into consideration, and I’m quite confident that it is not the case for their society itself.

My apologies for the unnaturally quick reply, I just happened to click in at the right moment.

But considering everything we’ve seen so far, it certainly seems like it’s not matriarchal, nor is it patriarchal; it’s gender egalitarian. There is no indication whatsoever in the canon that one gender is advantaged over the other, socially or economically. We’ve seen plenty of ponies, both male and female, doing all sorts of things.

You could make the argument that they have a technically have a matriarchal government at the top levels, since the current lineup of alicorns is all female, but all available evidence points towards their society being gender egalitarian. As for the lower levels of government, such as a potential senate, mayors, etc? We don’t see much of that in the show, other than a couple of mayors and maybe a few other ponies, so not much can be said there there, but given that everywhere else there are ponies of both genders, I’m sure the government is also staffed by both genders.

Either way, I’ve never bought the headcanon that Equestria is a matriarchal society. I see little to no real evidence to support that notion, unlike some form of gender-egalitarianism which we’ve had 4 and counting seasons to observe.

Feel free to headcanon whatever regardless, but I’m gonna disagree with the whole matriarchy headcanon.

We currently only have four of them, and considering how it seems to be earned, I see no reason whatsoever to believe that a stallion couldn’t ascend just because they are male, regardless of whether or not we will be seeing one in the show itself.

Hasbro has a bit a princess fetish however, so I suspect they’ll prioritize more of those though. But really, it seems unreasonable to assume that something like that would be restricted by gender. Forgive me if I have my doubts.

I think the only reason Shining Armor isn’t an alicorn is because he hasn’t earned it in the same way as his wife or Twilight. I sincerely doubt gender is at all relevant to being an alicorn.

I can agree that role reversal can be pretty damn cute, though.
