Eh true, it really doesn’t have to. Actually, I wonder if the Equestrian Bit is really gold. It could be a mixture of various metals like brass, nickel, silver, copper, etc (not in the same coin of course). I don’t know much about how currency is printed so I really don’t know.
 
That also makes me wonder how much one bit is actually worth, like what denominations are there and if there are any bill bits for amounts too high to carry around (something like a bank note).
 
Or maybe I’m just thinking too hard.

Silver is more rare than gold… and are only used for more expensive stuff…  
I mean… gold, diamonds and gems are very common in Equestria… but how much silver have we seen?
