The fact is, convoluted explanations for the scene above just aren’t necessary. The simplest interpretation of what we see here is that yes, they can process normal food like anybody else.

There is no clear statement that normal food even gives them sustenance at all, or if it’s even a necessity for them. If it does, then fine, I’ll retract what I said before. We do know, however, that negative energy does give them sustenance to where they wouldn’t even need to eat.

No, I think they indeed feed off the negative energy instead of eating normally. Their real forms show that the red pendants are not a fashion accessory, it’s actually physically connected to their bodies. Aria described their energy harvesting as “fast food” and saying she needed a “meal”, and whenever they did harvest negative energy, the expressions on their faces and movements show that they weren’t just absorbing it: they were consuming it. If they did have a normal metabolism like everyone else, then there wasn’t a need for them to keep feasting on negative energy, for their long time of being banished would’ve otherwise made them give up and try to instead adapt to living like humans do. The only times we see them every expressing a kind of interest in normal food is Sonata’s reaction to Taco Tuesday, implying that she tasted tacos before, and Aria’s comment on Sonata’s fruit punch, implying that she drank it earlier. Normal food seems more like something that can enjoy whenever they feel like it, while negative energy seems to be their actual diet, and thus necessity.

In one version of the legend, the Sirens were immortal and didn’t need to eat, and the island they lived on actually had no food. They themselves had no trouble existing there forever, but when they sang, sailors would never want to leave them. The sailors, who actually did need to eat, didn’t fare quite so well as the Sirens themselves.
