You basically summed me up as well.

Honestly, before the Rainbow Rocks shorts started coming out, I didn’t find Equestria Girls characters cute, at least nowhere near as cute as actual ponies. But the way a lot of the characters were shown, portrayed and animated in the shorts and teasers and then the movie itself, I had a change of heart. Sonata here has obviously won the hearts of Derpibooru, and is one of the best examples. But hell, even Sunset Shimmer is adorable now!
 
I still prefer real MLP ponies though, but now I do find their EqG parallels to be almost as cute in a lot of cases.
