But Sunset might get a better reception purely because she’s a better character for it.
 
Of course they would have to avoid a bad execution to capitalize on it.

I’m actually quite curious now, just how okay people would be if Sunset Shimmer became an alicorn princess? Would there be riots and hissy fits just like when Twilight became a alicorn? Or is the fandom now more a custom to the idea of Hasbro pony Princesses that they expect every two seasons somepony will become alicornized?

I love this. Sunny-sun should become a Princess at this point.
 
My only real problem is the forced perspective is broken, making Sunset appear way too large compared to Celestia & Luna. Ideally, she should be smaller here. But her expression is just so adorable, how could I not upvote?

I wonder what the chances are that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are not immortal, just very long lived, and they are at the end of their life span?  
And that Princess Celestia plans to someday soon hand over the role of raising the sun to Sunset Shimmer, and the role of raising the moon to Princess Twilight Sparkle?

Except magic doesn’t naturally exist in the human world of EQG. The human versions of the mane six seem to experience some bleed-over from the barrier between universes, but that’s only because their pony selves are the elements. They’ve established that Sunny is not able to use magic in the human world unless she has a magical artifact from the pony world.

Not necessarily. Let me spin you a story:
 
Sunset is invited back to Equestria. Stuff happens, she becomes an alicorn princess, everything seems good. It’s what she wanted all along, right? But… as she tries to settle into her new position, Sunset quickly realizes that it’s not meant to be. She’s not just uncomfortable with her wings or her crown, but with Equestria itself. After all the time she spent in the other world, she’s started to think of it as home and of herself as something other than a pony. And she can’t go a day without thinking about her friends from Canterlot High and whether they’re in danger now that she’s not there to help protect them from magical threats. Eventually she decides that where she belongs is back in those friends, back in the other world. After a tearful farewell to Celestia and the rest, she leaves once and for all to take her place as Equestria’s Princess of Humanity. (And cue a new line of Equestria Girls dolls, with Princess Sunset Shimmer leading the pack.)

Celestia forgave Sunny?
 
Of course, if they let her back into Equestria, that’ll be the end of the Equestria Girls toy line, so dat ain’t a-hap’nin’.

Keep in mind this is basically a concept picture on her becoming a princess in the future without any knowledge of what happens between now and then.
 
If Sunset was made just simply made a 5th princess and given the same ‘yay another princess’ reception that Twilight got, I agree it would be detrimental to her new character development.
 
But my hope is that this scenario only happens under far more thematic and well meaning points. Sunset doesn’t want to become some poofy princess, but she does want to do the right thing and honor her mentor at the same time. What if after some huge event, Celestia lost her powers or worse, and the only way to protect Equestria from harm is not only for all 8 heroes to protect Equestria with all their skills, but for Sunset to take her place as Princess of the Sun, one more mortal and more connected to the people?
 
The only 3 of the Mane 8 I could imagine becoming alicorns are Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash and Sunset Shimmer. But regardless of her heroic nature, Rainbow Dash already established she doesn’t want that fate no matter how strong she is, and Twilight is already starting to realize she can’t stand the pressure of being a princess. So Twilight giving up her former path from Celestia of being her alicorn successor, Sunset becomes the princess, not with thunderous applause, but with proud, quiet acceptance.
 
I feel that would be a great season or series finale, but only after Celestia and the others have gotten a lot more character development. :)

Saw this piece on Equestria Daily, and I’m very impressed by the detail put into this!!
 
I do hope that they consider trying this in the show, either in a later season, or the next Equestria Girls movie!!

Congrats, Sunny–er, Princess Sunny. Just try not to forget all the little people who helped you get there, would ya?
