I suppose the point was that this universe has more dangers in general than normal Equestria.
Sweetie Belle doesn’t really count because it was an illness, and Big Mac was a farm accident. You think someone would still look alright if they had a tractor fall on them?
Not to mention Shining has the least severe injury of all the augments we’ve seen. Celestia replaced both legs, Sweetie Belle replaced her entire vocal system, and Big Mac replaced most of his upper body, including his face.
Good point. Still could’ve made his helm and shoulderguards from it, especially since those pipes are really close to his head and shoulders.
Presumably the same reason they don’t make airplanes out of the same material as black boxes; it would be too heavy. He’s already lugging around however many gallons of evil smog acid.

Well, he was a enslaving tyrant who ruled through such incredible fear and oppression that his subjects repressed virtually all of their memories to avoid thinking about what he did to them. I’d say taking a hostage seems perfectly in-character.
