Outside of the inevitable similarities that arise from them both being changelings, I don’t see that they’re that close.

I meant it like there’s a reason why the Queens are in charge. Changelings drones are smart enough to follow orders, communicate and imitate ponies. But, they lack brilliance, like the ability to make complex plans or think outside the box. So, they’re ultimately not smart enough to figure out the best way to solve a problem like this isn’t to keep running at it.
 
Changeling commanders, the one with the fancier armors, are smarter (on par with average ponies) and less expendable and often lead squads of drones. They can have more verbose communication, pull off some clever tricks, and are all around more competent. And then there’s the queens, who have mental abilities on par or above the average ponies, and have the intelligence and cunning needed to lead a hive and expand.
 
So, imagine each level is Surrounded By Idiots of the lower level. Or at least that’s how I imagine it.
