Oh, right-G1 Scorpan was a human prince who got cursed, correct? Wouldn’t expect the precise particulars of that backstory to get carried over by G4, but you might be on to something with the satyr factor & old-school Anti-Rainbow Power(C). Whatever his lineage, the Scorpster gives me a serious baboon-by-way-of-Oz vibe…heck, maybe he cheesed off the Witch(es) of some compass direction or other.

I suspect, given the source G1 material, that neither started out that way. What they were to begin with would be pure speculation, though Scorpan may have originally been some sort of humanoid creature. I suspect if they had to the writers would make him originally some sort of satyr, and Tirek may have been his half brother as a result of a union between satyr and either pure centaur or pony. Some sort of corrupting influence (i.e. Rainbow of Darkness or something similar) may have changed their forms to be more monstrous later in life.

I suppose not-just threw her in for the random factor. I suspect Fluffpones to be impish, less malefic chaos entities, but headfanon again.

Come to think of it, I’d love to know whether Tirek’s horns are a standard FiM centaur appendage, Dark Power Side-Effect(R), or evidence of some minos in his lineage.

Agreed to the vast majority of the above. My wonky side-theory: races with a comparable degree of sapience have at least an outside chance of magick-enabled crossbreeding, and that’s without spell/potion assistance; it’s mainly cultural and/or predator-prey boundaries that keep mish-mashes from cropping up more often. Kinda doubt Equestrian mules have much in the way of fertility issues either.

…come to think of it, be interesting to know whether most of the sapient & merely sentient mix-and-matches predate or post-date Discord’s merry reign.

And where do Breezies fit in?

A horn is one thing, but a pair of wings is much bigger variance. Horses are more closely related to goats (or even narwhals or rhinoceroses) than to birds.

Speaking of bird-mammals, not only do we have griffons, but Gustave le Grande has a mustache on his beak.

And don’t even get me started on the genetic clusteryay that the chimera must represent.

(Discord gets a free pass because the laws of nature clearly do not apply to him.)

Simplest explanation? Equestrian biology simply has a different set of rules entirely.

Given that Everfree jerk sprouting thorny tail-spines outta nowhere, perhaps magic shape/structure-morphing isn’t an uncommon trick for adult or maturing dragons…that noted, still pretty sure winged drakes are born/hatched with ‘em, since neither of Spike’s spontaneous growth spurts included flappers. Put my vote down for separate subspecies, possibly a smidgen more densely-armored than flight-capable types.

And no kidding re: horses with bird wings and/or narwhal pointies, to say nothing of sundry flavors of sea pony. One dude on FIMfic proposed genetic engineering by a long-gone hyperadvanced race as part of his staggeringly involved fanon timeline. Fair warning: the latter link’s a loooong one.

Spike doesn’t have wings, so that raises a whole different question. Different breed/subspecies? Different species altogether? Birth defect? It’s obviously not a result of injury, since he hatched without them.

And if we’re asking about extra limbs, pegasi (and by extension alicorns) offer an even greater enigma.

Between the hatchling suckling reflex and some of those teen drakes’ heads o’ hair, I get the impression poneverse dragons are more proto-mammalian than pure reptilian. Factoring in the Mirror’s drake-to-EG!dog morphage & this Spike’s human(oid)ity only muddles things further.
