My headcanon is that Blueblood actually has a crush on Twilight Sparkle. She has a very graceful personality and of course is a “pureblooded Canterlot beauty”

Rarity on the other hand is “from a muddy village” and thus doesn’t treat her with respect.

If Rarity’s very, very lucky, and doesn’t slip up even once, she might get as far as paramour, but I kind of doubt that would appeal to her, nor do I think she’d want the sort of reputation she’d get from seducing a married stallion.

The difference is that when the chips are down, Blueblood uses another pony as a shield while Rarity kicks things in the face.

I do like the interpretation of Blueblood that he is somewhat similiar to Rarity in that he indeed likes luxury and drama and being pompous, but also grossly overacts and exaggerates those qualities when it might be useful to him (to get rid of golddiggers, for example).

I’m of the opinion that if they have to have him, it’s better to try to make him earn his screen time, rather than let his pointlessness hang out in the open.
 
It also bugs me that they have a whole conversation about how Sunset’s gotta be planning payback in the first movie and then nothing comes of it, then they bring it up again in the second movie like it’ll be important and then completely ignore it again. Don’t give me exposition on things I don’t actually need to know! It screws with my head!

Blueblood at least displayed a personality and leaves interesting questions about how he fits into the Equestrian government and how that compass rose cutiemark fits with all this.  
The problem is that he was only in 1 episode, and not only gave very little data to form an an opinion about who he is, but may also have been acting differently than he normally does.  
Imagine if all you knew about AJ or Fluttershy was what we saw them do at the gala, and nothing else. Wouldn’t one seem like a callous money grubbing dirtbag and the other like a psychotic maniac?

Yeah, that mention of him being Sunset’s ex really rubs me the wrong way, for the reasons that you mentioned as well as one more: That’s the only exposition about him that we ever receive. If you think about it, Rarity could have said any number of things to establish who Flash is: “He’s the most popular guy in school”, “He’s the lead guitarist in the rock music club”, “His head is completely empty”, etc. But instead, she says “He’s Sunset Shimmer’s ex-boyfriend.
 
…So by the movie’s own admission, Flash’s entire character is “love interest”.
 
All this being said, I don’t really blame the writers. I’ve developed the theory that Flash and his love interest status only exist due to executive mandate, and the writers are only including as much of him as is strictly required.

The tragedy of Flash Sentry is that there’s actually potential for him to be more, and it’s squandered. Not a lot more, necessarily, but he’s Sunset Shimmer’s ex-boyfriend, and it’s him who dumped her, and this is then basically ignored after it’s mentioned, save for one offhand comment in the next movie.
 
This is something that could be explored. Would he be one of the first to forgive her, or one of the last? If he loves Twilight and hates Sunset, how is he dealing with their friendship, specifically the fact that being around the girl of his dreams will often put him face-to-face with the ex he still hasn’t made peace with?
 
And then there’s the big questions. What happened between them? How bad did it get? Were there any good memories?
 
He might still be cardboard, but he’d at least be bumped up to corrugated cardboard.

to be fair Flash does have a reason to exist. to be the dream boy Twilight giggles at. not a good reason, but a reason.  
add anything to the story? nah. he could be absent and eqg would have been the same.

Honestly, at least Blueblood has a reason for existing and fulfills it to the letter (The reason in question is to be a jerk, in order to completely dash Rarity’s fantasies of him being a prince charming). Flash, on the other hand, exists for absolutely no reason and adds nothing to the story. That alone makes Blueblood the superior character.

Blueblood is a better character than Flash, but with that being said, TwiBlood isn’t my preferred ship.
