OP may be oversimplifying. Twilight does believe in time travel and parallel universes, after all. ;)

Hey, he’ll at least show up in person. That’s more than any real-world religion gets from its god(s). :P

But yeah, I get the feeling he’s though of as a “god of evil” type by most ponies who have heard of him (given that neither the CMC nor the Mane 6 knew who he was at first, though, there’s probably plenty who haven’t), and is gonna need to do quite a bit of PR work to fix that.

Wouldn’t Discord be closer to godhood than Celestia? If so, Twilight’s viewpoint might be closer to dystheism or misotheism; she believes he exists, but wishes he didn’t

  • looks up both terms * Dystheism sounds more like Twilight’s (and almost everypony else’s) attitude towards Discord. Celestia and Luna would be the main Goddesses of Equestria, and Cadence and Twilight (and I suppose Flurry Heart) would be Demigoddesses. Discord would be a God, but not one that’s worshipped by very many.
Background Pony #DA71
No. Atheism is merely a disbelief in deities. However, she has been taught by one of the closest things the MLP Universe has to a deity, so I doubt that Celestia could possibly be disbelieved in by anyone (pony or otherwise) in Equestria.

You seriously don’t get the fucking Stargate reference? God the people here who take everything 100% literally are driving me insane.

The phrase “false god(s)” is just a convenient shorthand for “any god(s) other than the one I happen to believe in, which is true and self-evident and not at all based on the fact that I was indoctrinated when I was too young to reason and too trusting to resist.”

Of course, if Celestia and Luna - who are not gods, are never called gods or treated like gods - trigger this reflexive reaction, someone might be a little hypersensitive on this topic.

If we take that position, why would we not also assume that the “real” gods are merely frauds we’ve yet to debunk? Why acknowledge the concept at all?

Also, it strikes me as petty and mean-spirited to decry as false gods those who never claimed divinity in the first place. Hell, they don’t even call themselves queens. What do you want them to do, stop lighting the sky?

They’re not gods, just charlatans.

It’s called hyperbole. I am in no way implying that Twilight would actually build a temple to, pray to, or sacrifice virgins to Princess Celestia. (How do we know Twilight doesn’t offer up virgin sacrifices to Celestia? Because Spike is still alive.)

Just to clarify: by deconfirmed atheistics-wise, I mean confirmed to not be an atheist.

I feel the divinity of Celestia and Luna may be debatable.

However, this is no obstacle. Twilight can also speak of an ancient and inscrutable being, one with power that by far dwarfs even that of mighty Celestia. His name is Discord, and she’s getting real sick of his shit. (Hey, believing in a god does not always mean worshipping them. Twilight knows Discord is very real and has a power she can scarcely comprehend. This does not prevent her blood pressure from rising at the mere mention of his name.)

I don’t think Celestia is really an object of worship for Twilight, she’s more of an object of great respect, and Twilight probably views Celestia as more of a mentor than anything else. Her ascension probably hasn’t changed that.

As for her being deconfirmed atheistics-wise, I’m not sure if she could be considered an atheist. She believes in and is loyal to Tia and Luna, and they’re basically gods, theyre just never referred to as gods.

Why do you wish they were goddesses? I agree it would be awesome (especially considering my fanon where Celestia and Luna are basically deities,) but what are your reasonings behind it?

I kinda just want to see how militant atheist’s on the internet would react, I’d especially love to see how the ones that like the show would feel. But that would probably never happen, I can’t imagine that any of the characters on FIM even know what a “god” is, also I’m assuming it would cause a lot of controversy so it’s probably better if they’re just referred to as princesses.

I remember back in 2008 or 2009 or so this one guy on dA found a journal entry I made announcing my own spiritual/religious beliefs at the time which were admittedly kinda ridiculous from an outsider’s point of view (IE, they were very much the kind of “abnormal” you mentioned, with mythology and stuff based on the likes of Legend of Zelda, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Disney, Warhammer 40K and various animes I liked at the time, in addition to some IRL inspirations,) and he basically went all out in tearing into my beliefs and dishing out ad hominems. He basically told me the very existence of my beliefs were offensive to humanity and should be “pissed on, shat on, stomped on and spat on” right in front of my eyes. I had to delete the fucking journal because somehow a shit-ton of other asshole atheists started trolling the everloving fuck out of me…I was literally reduced to tears.

That’s unfortunate, I’ve always felt that all religious beliefs aren’t harmful to anyone deserve respect. The only kind of belief that is offensive to humanity is the kind that breeds hate and hubris.

And nowadays, if you look at the stamps of many of the most obnoxiously-vocal haters, trolls and anti-bronies, there is a very high likelihood of them having God-hating or religion-bashing stamps on their pages.

Pride, that’s what I’ve always blamed. Back when I was a christian I blamed petty hatred towards others like that on pride. As an atheist, that belief hasn’t changed. As long as it makes them feel good, they will hate something.

Then I think you are a “true” skeptic if you are not full of yourself and absolutely positively sure that science is the absolute authority over everything, the way the militant skeptics do. I think you are spot-on in pointing out that many of these so-called “skeptics” are really not skeptical at all: they are arrogant and annoying.

Normally I’d have a problem with a term like “true skeptic”, but if it helps differentiate between actual skeptics and people who just call themselves skeptics to save face, then I can definitely support it.

I have had more than a few “profound” experiences involving visions of ponies. Most were dreams but I had one or two lucid dreams or possibly even astral experiences where I’ve met up with MLP characters, and many of these happened when I was deeply afraid of something in my life. It helped greatly, and that’s actually my main reasoning for loving MLP.

That’s interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever had a lucid dream before, I can’t even imagine what astral projection is like.

Almost makes me wish that Tia and Luna were objects of worship, but that would make their relationship with their subjects kind of awkward.

Celestia is an object of worship for Twilight. Or at least she was. Not sure how ascension has effected that.

Still, does that deconfirm her atheistics-wise? I think it does, but I’m not sure I’m impartial.
