That isn’t official canon.
We’ve have several cases of IDW making up stuff that the show has completely ignored and done something contradicting. So the same will be likely to happen with Cadance too, if we ever get a backstory. At least she’s been an alicorn since Twilight was little.

They are refered to as unicorns in season 1
But from season 3, the term “alicorn” was first used.

Celestia, Luna, Cadance and Twilight has been said to be the four alicorns.

…a lot of new information we didn’t had 5 years ago ^^’
