It’s still considered a humorous take, like Molestia or Cupcakes Pinkie, and if someone indicates that they legitimately believe that is the pony’s actual characterization, that person will quickly be laughed down.

Nope. All of the sirens - Sonata, Aria, and Adagio - had that gem in the first place; these sirens would cause a bunch of disharmony then absorb it as energy in the gem. As humans, they were worn as necklaces, and the actual position in the siren form was more towards the chest. Watch “Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks” for more info/background on it.
