a SAD barrel roll.
Then he shouldn’t have agreed to babysit.
Braeburn is still Equestria’s worst babysitter, though
I still think he only fell asleep because he was tanked to the gills on painkillers after Applejerk nailed him in the busted leg.
I haven’t seen the ep in a while, I’d have to rewatch it to see if AJ was any worse than usual.
Braeburn is still Equestria’s worst babysitter, though. I stand by this.
I’m not sure if it’s because of frustration and her trauma or because she just looks down on foals a lot and feels superior over them because she’s adult. We never saw her talk so condescending with someone before she did with Applebloom, so the latter is more likely.
Either way, it wasn’t right, she was a real jerk there, and then it got worse when she forced herself and her “traditions” on Applebloom and even questioned her being part of the family for not wanting to follow these traditions.
That was the last straw for me.

That’s a character flaw of AJ’s in general, she can overreact sometimes if somepony doesn’t see things her way. And if it’s coming from her little sister, who generally agrees with her and whose safety she holds herself personally responsible for, over a matter pertaining to said safety, that probably makes it even more frustrating to her.
Also, the one who really screwed up this episode was Braeburn. When the big clumsy hobo who lives in the woods takes better care of foals than you do, you are officially Equestria’s worst babysitter.
@TexasUberAlles
Especially not when she’s with a group that gets themselves in trouble all the time.
For the sheriff, his motivations regarding catching Troubleshoes were understandable. He didn’t know what TroubleSshoes’ intentions were, from his view (as well as the view of the episode’s watchers) he was a ruthless saboteur and killer that endangered countless ponies. And then three fillies….. Which strengthened his resolve to catch him. He has acted very professionally with this.
What I really hate him for, though, is how he treated Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle. They tried to tell him that Trouble Shoes is alright, in a very straight forward way, but he didn’t even listen and ignored what they said….. Because they are fillies. So, he just didn’t take them serious because they are foals and belittling foals like that is just wrong.
And for Applejack….. I understand why she is so overprotective. It’s caused by the death of her parents and the trauma this left.
So I understand why she couldn’t act any other way and the punishment was justified, as when they ran off to search for Trouble Shoes, they didn’t yet know that he’s a good guy and they went in there completely unprepared, without a real plan and without any weapons to defend themselves, which would have been incredibly dangerous to do for adult ponies even, so they were very careless there and played with their lives. And they didn’t seem like they completely understood why it was wrong trying to catch him without the necessary preparations to keep them safe, so, this was okay.
What I’m actually holding against Applejack, the reason why I don’t really like Applejack anymore after having seen this episode (and I even don’t like her at all anymore since “The Cart Before the Ponies” aired), is because the way she belittled Applebloom and talked down to her.
“Now quit your bellyachin’!”, there would have been a more nice and polite and non-condescending way to tell Applebloom that she doesn’t want them to run around on the rodeo anymore because of the assault by Trouble Shoes that almost killed them. She was talking down to her there like she’s some idiot and treated her disrespectfully.
That’s not how you talk with a foal, much less your little sister….. Trauma because of having witnessed her parents die or not, that’s no reason or excuse to be so condescending to her little sister.
She acted like a jerk there and since then, she still does act like a jerk to Applebloom on occasion and that’s making her not good in my book anymore.

I can’t imagine why an orphan who was old enough to understand her parents’ deaths might be overprotective of a younger sibling.
@EHAN
Applebloom is using a broom. Which picks up dust. Which gets in the eyes, making you blink.
While Sweetie and Scoots are pushing the hay bale. Much less blinking required.
I could look at this .gif for hours.
though unlikely, those tops are separate from the barrel and could rotate at a different rate if loose enough.
there’s no sense of weight because the barrel is rolling downhill and she’s slowing it down, since when she lets go it speeds up.
since the barrel is pulling on her hooves that’s why they sometimes snap back so quick.
head is motionless because sweetie’s servo motors are on the fritz again.
the hay is being pushed incrementally because it’s wobbling against her steady pressure, like pushing jello from the top.
the hay bale doesn’t get a shadow because the light source is directly over it, and it’s flush to the ground.
it’s not that the barrel is rolling too fast, but the horizontal seams should slow down at the top and the bottom, as the curve makes more sideways and less vertical motion. but instead the seams move at the same rate from top to bottom, making it look like they’re ‘zipping’ quickly near the top and the bottom, because we intuitively expect them to move slower there. but frankly, just let your eyes unfocus a bit and bam, no animation error visible.
anyway hope that lets you enjoy the most adorable barrel roll.
What about Scootaloo? We didn’t see her blink either.
Scootabot confarm
“brush, brush, brush… sigh”
I don’t mean to be harsh, I’m just stating what needs to be fixed for it to be perfect. And being perfect isn’t a reasonable goal.
I loved the episode overall and I know that they work really hard to produce quality content. The rest of the episode just screams it like the previous seasons. This little wrinkle just stands out when the rest is so good.
‘pay attention’ is kind of an overly simplistic way to put it though.
While pre-production and layout is done at DHX, The flash animators themselves seem to be outsourced overseas. Situations like that are infamous for leaving artists on tight deadlines and long hours, which increases mistakes like these and makes corrections (retakes) more costly.
That’s all part of what animators need to pay attention to though, to make everything look and flow as realistically as possible.
Well, that was detailed! Now I see all your points.
Can’t help but feel it’s a bit harsh to look so closely at a short moment of a flash show, but all you said is valid.
Barrel top is completely out of sync of the barrel sides.
Hooves are going EVERYWHERE with no sense of weight. It just looks like the barrel is rolling and Sweetie’s just sliding over it with her hooves.
Hooves on barrel missed a tween so it has a jump…not that much of the movement made any sense in the first place.
Barrel is rolling way too fast for what’s shown.
Head is completely motionless, but they bothered to tween the tail? Just rotate her head or look down a little with her eye after a blink to show she’s kinda paying attention to what she’s doing. Applebloom does it. This is a kids show, quit having an existential crises Sweetie Belle.
Scoot’s leg jump not getting one frame to smooth switch between the back and front. That’s been a thing in the show for a long time, but it still rubs me the wrong way.
Scoots just holds her hooves out, but they animated the hay like it was being pushed incrementally. Just needed to sync a small fore-leg bend with the pushes and would’ve been grape.
Why does the barrel get a shadow, but the hay bale not, when the static background hay bale does get a shadow?
The top three are just bad. The other things are issues that are going to happen/nitpicky (and don’t really involve the focus of this .gif in particular), but they’re not helping what should’ve been the most adorable barrel roll.
…I can’t believe I just wrote this much on a 3 second gif.
Obviously not. Maybe the bottom, but side of it is conventionally animated
