I mean followers on DA/tumblr/etc, not patrons.
As for censorship - it’s just an example of bad advertising.
P.S. Panties and bra are best censorship.
Huh, I guess we have different definitions of “small number of fans”. I was thinking more like a few dozen followers amounting to at least ~$50 a month. But yeah, you’re right, if you get less than the cost of a commission… Not really worth it to have special Patreon-exclusive commissions.
Though clever Patreon users might be able to figure ways around this by rewarding followers with things like early access, high res versions, or source file downloads. None of those really cost the artist much in the way of making actual commissions… Though I guess those aren’t really the pay walls/censorship that we were talking about.
*their P campaign
It’s all about efficiency. Well-established artist can get much more money from Patreon crowd-funding than his regular commissions (if he is famous enough, he might get rich just by receiving donations. i.e. no rewards in the form of prize art). Small artist will most likely get $0-20 per month there, which is worse than his regular commissions because he must pay 5-10% cut to Patreon. Yes, anyone can start his P campaign, but will it be successful without a certain number of followers? That’s what I was talking about.
Well yeah for those who do art as a hobby, Patreon is kinda a weird. But even so, I could imagine some very reasonable explanations for something like that. Like maybe some people have secure jobs that they’re not content with and want to see if maybe they could make a living off of something else that they enjoy (like art). In that case, can you really blame them for testing the waters by setting up their Patreon in their spare time?
Also, I hope you’re not trying to imply that no one should be allowed to be self-employed as a professional artist. I mean, that would just be silly. Art is a skill/craft just like designing bridges or building websites or fixing cars. It takes a lot of effort/dedication to hone it into something that can produce products worth buying. I don’t see why people shouldn’t be allowed to make a living off of it just like with any other skill.
@xn
I’ll agree that censorship like this is pretty crude and that it’s a bit odd that they’d post it here (where there are a lot of people who can get pretty turned-off by it). But, even so, I’d like to point out that this image still has a positive score. More people enjoyed it than disliked it.
If Patreon was really intended for only people with large, pre-existing fanbases, then why wouldn’t they have imposed some sort of rule to force those with only a small number of fans out? I mean, they could up the cost of having a Patreon account, or only allow accounts with some minimum number of followers, or require some minimum overall pledge amount. That some people can actually make money through Patreon even with only a small number of fans should be proof enough that the people who run that site don’t think it’s just for well-established content creators. And if the people who run Patreon think that, who are you (or I, or anyone else) to say otherwise?
It’s not the reason to post P-censored teasers that say “I’m too elite to post free art, now go pay me moneys”. There are more appropriate ways to earn money from art, and this is the example of how not to do it.
Also some people misunderstand the purpose of Patreon. Patreon is not about teasers and censorship for beginner artists, it’s for funding established artists with significant fan base and steady flow of artwork.
they can always find a normal job, like every normal human being and make drawing as hobby/something to earn bonus money not only source of income to live… being artist don’t make you physical impossible/special so you can’t get normal job >.> someone needs to work few 3-4 days to commission artist for a picture he/she will do in few hours and then artist can do another pic and another and another = he will earn more money from sitting in his house and drawing pictures than 1 guy will earn in 1-2 weeks… that’s bs. And patreon even makes this even bigger parody.
I find it hilarious/pathetic every time I see some person suddenly not being commissioned for a while so he makes dramatic sad posts (I’m staring/no money for bills gonna be homeless/I stick cause no water and soap/etc” and boom suddenly rain of donations/commissions and hey “I’m secured for another few months hurr durr, no need to find a normal job so I can earn money to pay bills/buy food, back to playing games and drawing pictures”
But, what is the difference?
and thats how i prefer(red) supporting artists. easy-setup paywall for everyone…not so much
I mean people, you do realize that artists gotta make a living. Like they need to be able to pay rent/buy food. They’re not magical begins that live off of the mirth and good wishes of their fans. Patreon is just the latest in a long line of tools that artists have used to make money off of their artistic abilities.
If there wasn’t Patreon, artists would still be selling their work, just not through such a centralized site. They always have, and they probably always will.

No, Derpibooru is a nonprofit. All money it accrues is used to maintain the servers. And they only get money from the advertisements and the occasional donor.
I think “Patreon Pasties” should be the new tag.
but for some weird odd reason mods/admins allow such thing here… that’s just bs
does derpiboru gets %%profit from pateron artists or what?
its just pisses me off.
This is basically what I wanted to say. I just didn’t know how to say it.
It doesn’t increase the quality, it doesn’t allow for anything new, and in fact only makes the product has had content (which previously would have been included) taken away and held for ransom.
I’m not going to hide Albana’s artist tag, but I’ve certainly hidden the “Patreon Censored” tag.
economic stimulus is a cancer now? dude just wait itll come out anyway
