Actually, Bubble Eye goldfish - indeed, pretty much every weird thing about a Goldfish and their dozen or more sub-breeds(massive tails, bubble eyes, various physical defects and weird gold colouration) was bred into them by humans.
They were popular in ancient china and were originally bred from a kind of carp that was domesticated for food - originally bred mostly to be easy to breed. But one natural mutation into a weird colour later, instead the chinese started breeding them for looks and resulted in a lot of sub-breeds of goldfish that basically could never survive in the wild.
Reminds of a puffer fish.
Very simple animals make very simple instinctual judgments based on facts such as “does this thing look bigger than me?”. They’re not smart enough to think “that’s an air sac and it’s not threatening, so I can still eat this thing.”
