Description

I honestly don’t get why so many fans white knight Filthy Rich. Sure, he disciplined Diamond Tiara in Family Appreciation Day - but aside from that one episode and taking Diamond Tiara to the Foal and Filly Fair in another episode, he’s never done much in the way of parenting. Don’t you think Diamond Tiara would be a little better behaved if Rich was the father his defenders say he is? I am not saying that Rich is a bad pony; I am saying he’s got serious failings as a parent that are evident in the ill-behavior of his daughter. After all, how a child acts tends to reflect a person’s abilities as a parent.

True, but all three of them seem to have a much more hands-on approach than Filthy Rich does. It’s also fair to say that none of them are technically legal guardians, but they often serve as motherly figures to their younger sisters.

Your last sentence confuses me, are you saying that unless they died recently Applejack couldn’t be Applebloom’s legal guardian? Because you are aware that their parents are dead in all but name and have probably been dead for a long time.

But their roles aren’t “mother”, it’s “older sibling who provides experience and another perspective and sometimes conflict”. Rarity and Rainbow Dash don’t seem to be raising their associated filly, they’re just available to hang out with. None of those mares (Applejack, Rainbow Dash or Rarity) are strictly parents and Apple Bloom’s legal guardian is most likely Granny Smith. Now, Applejack, I can consider somewhat motherly and I could very easily believe that if she was old enough at the time to do so, she would sign the paperwork to become her sister’s guardian. But unless their parents died recently, she probably couldn’t.

His appearances in show cannot logically correlate to his parenting skills. You say he’s too busy to be with his daughter to bond with her,I’m good with that idea but don’t base it on show appearances. That’s like saying Celestia doesn’t do any governing since we saw her do paper work once.

Rainbow Dash effectively serves the same function as Rarity and AJ in episode where she appears alongside Scootaloo; thus, she is placed in the same category as they are.

@Antonyourknee
Perhaps he’d be closer to the average if he’d made more appearances, but as it stands, he’s below average.

That awnser still doesn’t explain using parental appearance as the main factor of good parenting when by common sense a side character has to appear less times in a show by default to make way for the relations of main characters like the parents of the CMC who you didn’t even compare,you compared him to the mane six,how can Filthy out appear them?.

Your not saying Filthy rich would be a good parent if he had the most appearances on the show are you? Cause appearances alone seem what your basing parenting skills on.

What about Scootaloo? You compared her and she’s never so much as mentioned that she has parents. I don’t think Rainbow Dash is legally responsible for her. Plus, wouldn’t it be more like:

Sweetie Belle - 42 Episodes total, 3 with her parents, 2 in which they actually interact (ew, math!)

I only compared the four members of the filly seven* whose parents/guardians have actually appeared. Think of it this way: If I’m comparing a group of electric cars, I’m not going to include non-electric cars in my comparison. Likewise, if I’m comparing the number of appearances the parents/guardians of fillies whose parents/guardians have appeared, I’m not going to include fillies whose parents haven’t appeared.

Well you can’t really compare the appearances of main characters and side characters as proof of a parenting issue. Obvisiouly the CMC and their guardians who are all main characters and where most of the family lessons are focused are gonna be shown the most whereas Filthy rich will only appear to show a point (to get DTs punishment and to compare his story to Granny Smiths ect.).

If a side characters father had more appearances than the guardians of a main character something is wrong with the show. By the number logic your going for Snips and snail as well as Twist all have horrible parents since they never show up at all.

And don’t say their lack of parents appearance dosnt fit in the number scheme and thus exempts them either.

How does Rich stack up when compared to Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo’s parents and guardians?

Apple Bloom - 52 Episodes total, 18 with Applejack (32%)
Sweetie Belle - 42 Episodes total, 8 with Rarity (19%)
Scootaloo - 40 Episodes total, 8 with Rainbow Dash (20%)
Diamond Tiara - 15 Episodes total, 2 with Filthy Rich (13%)

The average number of episodes where the fillies are seen with their parents/guardians is 9. The average percentage of episodes where the fillies are seen with their parents/guardians is 21%. Applejack is by far and away the best, going above and beyond the average number of appearances in both episode count and percentage. Rainbow Dash and Rarity fall slightly below the average, but still get passing grades.

Rarity - 8 Episodes (89% of Average), 19% (90% of Average)
Rainbow Dash - 8 Episodes (89% of Average), 20% (95% of Average)

By comparison, here are Rich’s numbers.

Filthy Rich - 2 Episodes (22% of Average), 13% (61% of Average)

So yeah. Rich is not a bad guy, nor is he a scoundrel, but he doesn’t seem to be cut out for fatherhood. Heck, Rainbow Dash has been more active in Scootaloo’s life than Filthy Rich has been in Diamond Tiara’s and she’s not even a blood relative or a legal guardian!
TheAmazingPeanuts

Well we don’t really know his character that much.

For what we know that he is nicer then Diamond Tiara, but I won’t be surprised to find out that he was a bully while he was a kid like his daughter.

To be fair, both Rarity and Applejack are relatively involved in their sisters lives. Filthy Rich has only been seen doing any sort of parenting twice. Plus, don’t you think Diamond would be a little better behaved if he was more involved with her life?

@Ebalosus
What makes you think I don’t disapprove of that style of parenting, too? If Di was Treehuggers daughter, I’d probably make a similar joke about her being a hippie parent. It just so happens that since Rich is - well - rich, I decided to make a joke about economics.

The Cakes might have a little more screen time, but yeah, if Filthy Rich has less, I don’t think it’s by much.
To be fair to OP, Filthy was absent from the cutecenera, I believe. Which isn’t a great bit of dadding, though I chalk it up more to not having a design for him yet than him not caring.

I think Rarity and Sweetie belles parents would fit the joke more since they preety much dumped their youngest with their oldest so they go on vacation that has lasted three seasons. And let’s not even talk about Appleblooms and Scootloos parents who don’t even have the decency to show up except in shooting star form apperantly.
Aurora Glimmer

He’s a decent enough father when he appears, but otherwise it seems as though he’s strangely absent from Diamond’s life. If he was more involved in Diamond’s life, chances are we’d see a change in her behavior.

I honestly don’t get why so many fans white knight Filthy Rich here on Derpibooru

Yeah, what a scumbag! The way he tried to make Diamond show the Apple family the same respect he does, the way he made a mutually satisfactory deal with Big Macintosh without trying to cheat him (that we know of). And don’t forget that he had the nerve to be happy at a wedding! Reprehensible.

@Crystal Neighybánya
he’s the textbook definition of an absentee parent.

Is he? Because so far, we’ve seen him take the time to go to Family Appreciation Day, take Diamond to the Foal and Filly Fair (pictured below) and she mentioned that he was at least a little involved in her cutecenera. For someone who’s only been in 4 episodes (5, if you count Diamond mentioning him in Pinkie Pride), that’s not a bad amount of parenting. Especially considering he’s one of the few parents we’ve actually seen on the show.
