Really? Potahto is closer to the Spanish root word? That is interesting… (also, I was not attempting to make a pun about the root word of potato xD)
Taino batate (sweet potato) + poss. Quechua papa (potato) → Spanish patata → English potato.
Brit here. Nobody ever says po·TAH·to unless they’re calling the whole thing off, but it’d be closer to the Spanish pronunciation.

I was joking about Potahto. Nobody who’s talking normally ever says Potahto, no matter where they come from or how posh their accent.
I think Tomahto is far more common than Tomayto in the UK regardless of regional accent. I could be wrong though, the north (esp the NE) are quite fond of using hard A’s (like “sand” - as opposed to the soft A in words like tomahto. Maybe they say tomatto? o_O I’m just theorising here, please ignore me :P)
I’ve never heard anyone in the US who wasn’t affecting a British accent pronounce it ‘tomahto’ or ‘potahto’. And that is a good question, though, since it’s not even a case of adopting the Spanish word, which is ‘papa’, since the English would have only heard about it secondhand.
Tomayto seems to be the more common pronunciation, I think. Same with potato. However, I’m actually Canadian.

Which is more common in the US - Tomayto, or Tomahto? In the UK, it tends to be Tomahto more often than not.
And I’ve often wondered why Tomato can be pronounced both ways, but pronouncing Potato as Potahto just sounds dumb? xD
