Yeah, in the original ending Snake was supposed to blow his brains out. The part with Big Boss instead showing up and info dumping for an hour or so was added later.  
And Snake shooting himself isn’t the “original” original ending. In the first drafts Snake and Otacon turn themselves in and get executed because of all those terrorism charges.
