Description

There have been alot of jokes about Starlight Glimmer being a ponified Stalin, but her methods and ideology seem to be more consistent with those of Pol Pot.

Fun facts from Wikipedia:

Pol Pot was known as “Vach du Mach” or One with the Gun.

On the surface, society in Democratic Kampuchea was strictly egalitarian. The Khmer language, like many in Southeast Asia, has a complex system of usages to define speakers’ rank and social status. These usages were abandoned. People were encouraged to call each other “friend”, or “comrade” (in Khmer, មិត្ដ mitt), and to avoid traditional signs of deference such as bowing or folding the hands in salutation.

Yep. Sounds just like Mao’s China or Pol Pot’s Cambodia: ever read about how Mao tried to industrialize China by having farmers make steel in backyard furnaces?

Yeah, Glimmer’s methods and ideology seem most similar to those of Maoism. Pol Pot was inspired by the practices of the Cultural Revolution and many of the things the Khmer Rouge did in Cambodia/Kampuchea also occurred during the Cultural Revolution in China.

I’d agree with the description. If Starlight was meant to be a communist allegory, it would have been Maoism, because only Mao expected an entire nation to function as jack-of-all-trades. For all the hardship Stalin brought, his regime did promote individuals to excel at their craft as long as that craft wasn’t statecraft. There was an immense propaganda drive to inform people of those who pulled off herculean feats and honours were bestowed for civil and military excellence alike, if only to encourage others to emulate those exaggerated accomplishments. Sugar Belle on the other hand informs us that Equaltown did not let her be a good baker in order not to offend anyone else’s cooking. Only under Maoism were citizens required to be at least average on fields not pertaining to their primary job, and even then it was not so much to bring the others down as it was from a misguided belief it would make people more self sufficient if they all grew their own food, forged their own tools, built their own furniture and sewed their own clothes.

he’s not an a easy guy to reference to IMO. unlike the nazis/soviets the khmer rouge ain’t exactly a good group to romanticize (they don’t have an iconic look or hardware) and his claim to fame is killing most of his OWN people.

Well, Jim Jones and Pol Pot were quite similar to one another in terms of their ideology and their methods. Infact, Jim Jones expressed his admiration for both Pol Pot and Pol Pot’s mentor (Mao Zedong) on numerous occasions. The main difference between the two was that Pol Pot implemented his policies on a national scale.
