Prior relationships are grandfathered and the prof won’t be fired for one. However, the Department is going to make every effort to specifically assign the prof to classes not being taken by the student they’re involved with.
 
If for some reason, say a small department with few options, the faculty member absolutely must teach a class that the student absolutely must take, then you can be sure the Administration will be keeping a hawk eye on the prof’s teaching, grading and other mentorship responsibilities to ensure that neither undue favor nor unwanted pressure is involved. If at all possible, it’s far better to avoid the problem entirely.

Like say for instance, if I was dating someone for four years. A week or so later, I get accepted at a college that I had no knowledge that she landed a job at. Later, I found out that one of my girlfriend is teaching a class that is on my schedule. Would the student teacher relationship law apply?
 
A friend of mine has a couple of pet turtles. Keeping turtles as pets is illegal. But the law doesn’t apply to her. Why? It’s because she got those turtles before the “no pet turtles” law was passed. So, if a cop found out he/she couldn’t do anything to her.

I believe it must be seen as unprofessional for a college instructor to date a student… at least in campus. Their private life is theirs, as long as the superiors of that professor is not being too distracted.

I’ve always wondered, what would it be like if you’re dating someone that teaches at a college you’re about to enroll in? Then later on you find out that she’s going to be the professor in one of the classes on your schedule? Does the law against student teacher relationships apply?

This just reminded me of a time in history that a man did fall in love with a student. One Mr. Alexander Graham Bell. He was smart so he quit his job and hooked up with his love. No crime if you hook up with one of your students at a school you USED to work at after quitting.
