Kinda like every other ship in fandom.
Shipper logic seems to work like “they stood next to each other”, “they know each other, so that means they want to know each other”, “they act kind of like each other”, “they’re both polar opposites”, and “pairing these two character archetypes is my fetish”.

The production crew in the pilot’s audio commentary originally wanted Spike have a crush on Fluttershy rather than Rarity and agreed that it would have made more sense. Look it up, its not hard to find.

Well, I have seen someone complain to Jim Miller about Princess Spike and Big Jim does think that season 6 will improve him.
Do you ever think that there could have been something in the future that it could have Spike’s crush shift from Rarity to Fluttershy?
And there would be an excellent starting point: Spike slowly helping Fluttershy understanding that not all dragons are evil, and that even with Spike as a baby dragon, eventually he’s gonna grow up too. I really do wish that there is something done so that Fluttershy knows that Spike is still Spike, no matter what he looks like. He’s still the same dragon, just with more to love and give. :D
It’s like rarijack opposites attract ones a nerd the others a jock that makes for interesting interactions.

I don’t recall ever hearing that anywhere. In fact, one of the writers said the primary reason for Spike’s crush on Rarity was just to point out to the viewers that Rarity was an especially beautiful pony. I think it’s on the commentary for the Season 1 DVD set.
I find both of those hard to believe.

She’s the one that has more in common with him than anyone else. Even Rarity.
I think someone even said she was originally the one Spike was going to have a crush on (since it made way more sense) but it was changed afterwards, for whatever reason.
It’s kinda strange that never really came up ever again.
