I thought that was the legend of Darth Starswirl, the Wise?  
I thought this was the story Celestia tells Twilight to get her to join up on Team Sith.

“Ironic, she could save others from death, but not herself.”
 
“Is it possible to learn this power?”
 
“…Not from a Jedi Bearer.”
