RD doesn’t have a sister (or at least didn’t until recently) and AJ had been removed from the race. The fact that a random average family beat Rarity tells volumes that she is no match for top athletic ponies.
She managed to do extremely well in the obstacle course race in Sisterhooves Social, only losing with Sweetie to one other team. And that was while she was completely caked over with mud.
