My best guess: it’s a mix of the decline in quality of Sonic games (despite the fact that they’ve been on the mend since Sonic 06) and the bad reputation of Sonic fans on the internet. Nobody wants to be thought of as obese manchild with no taste in video games who constantly fantasizes about sex with Knuckles, so by constantly professing hatred for all things Sonic, they prove that they are not Sonic fans, and therefore normal.
