I think the vast majority of the people left in this fandom are here for the porn and or colorful ponies.
Although I once had minor success with a grimdark ask blog and my only real insight to it is that the genre was oversaturated with over the top edginess and at times just being straight up derivative of each other.
I think grimdark hinged a lot on popular grimdark fanfics considering the artwork made depicting “Cupcakes” and “Rainbow Factory”.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there has been another “big” grimdark fanfic since then.
I’m of the opinion that people generally didn’t like cupcakes or rainbow factory, but that dramatic readings and the artwork brought it to life. The only reason why cupcakes got popular was cause it was a meme.
Perhaps the fact that it was a meme gave that kinda artwork a place in the fandom. While writing this response I also came to think of that the interest in creepypasta peaked around 2014 and has been steadily declining since.
I think it’s up to us as artists to try and make our artwork more compelling, I don’t think most people are out after pushing down dark art. While there are certainly some people that do look down on it, most people pay it no mind cause of the oversaturation.
Cause god damn another creepy picture of Pinkamena covered in blood with a knife in her mouth and a banner over her which reads “Life is a Party”, never seen that before.
I don’t know, I’m probably just talking out my ass.
