I think a little more than .1% of it is good. Sturgeon’s Law says only 90% of everything is crap, after all. But you’re kind of proving my point. Its association with the cheesy pop stuff makes people not really give it a chance.

Another genre I find to be quite underrated is symphonic black metal.

A lot of people only listen to Emperor and Dimmu Borgir and skip everything else.

So I just stumbled upon this video and I expected it to be another “music today sucks” video but surprisingly, it turned out to be an alright video.

I do agree with him that pop music isn’t the main forefront of popular music now since rap/trap music is what the mainstream are listening to now and that some sort of revival needs to happen since I myself am a pop music aficionado as well. However, I feel like he was being a bit too positive toward the pop stars that he mentioned, which made the video come off as heavily biased. Still, a surprising video that got me somewhat agreeing with him.

Am I the only one that gets sick of seeing people say this all the time about everything?

I know I’m a pessimistic, but damn, it’s just annoying at this point.

And no, I’m not talking about any specific thing at all. Just people like to remind everyone of this all the time especially when mentioning fanworks. It’s disheartening.

Many songs sound better slowed down to me. I discovered that years ago.

It feels nice to have seen that done so prominently in the past two years. I’m not entirely fond of vapourwave back when it was bigger, but it was cool to see slowing down music being a significant technique in that genre.

My issue with Vaporwave is how they often add other elements to their song like more percussion or even an EDM style production, which to me undermines the whole song. The song being slowed down though is what I preferred the most.

I’ve recently started to notice a vibe that seems to be readily apparent in 2010s music, particularly 2010s rock. That is that they all seem to have this attitude of not caring.

I guess that in a way, it does reflect the culture and attitudes of a lot of late Millennials and Gen Z-ers (or as some call them, “Zoomers”) in general, and is also probably influenced by internet culture, hipster irony, and by a lot of ‘90s alternative. It also explains why so many of these bands have terrible names. It’s dumb, but it matches the music in general, so who even cares, right?

My unpopular opinion about this is, this aesthetic is overall tiring and most definitely won’t age well in later years. Bands like Twenty One Pilots, Foster the People, etc. don’t do much for me. I miss when music was downright epic-sounding, anthemic, when it seemed like the musicians cared about what they were singing. I wish I could get into bands like TOP, but they just seem… boring to me. And IMO, if the musicians aren’t interested in what they’re playing or singing, why should I be?

That’s why I’m hoping that bands like Muse and The Struts will catch on more in the States.

Im no TØP fan but I thought Trenches was good, they matured their sound more on that one.

Muse had their peak relevency 5 or so years ago, theyve pretty much lost all interest in the mainstream. I remember back when The Resistance was out they were inescapable. It wasnt fun for someone who isnt a fan of them.

Vaportrap is the only style of Vaporwave that commonly adds percussion and such to it.

My issue with Vaporwave is more compositional. I love sample based music but Vaporwave often goes the most bare minimum route of sampling techniques and doesnt transform itself as interestingly as albums like Since I Left You or Endtroducing. There are a few exceptions like Eccojams Vol. 1 and some of the Vaportrap stuff can be appealing since it adds percussion into the mix.

The 1980s gave a weird sort of resurgence in popularity to a ‘60s band, Tommy James and the Shondells. Three of their songs were covered in the ‘80s and made it onto the Billboard Hot 100. (Tiffany’s cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now” and Billy Idol’s live cover of “Mony Mony” were #1 hits, while Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ version of “Crimson and Clover” peaked at #7.)

…You figured it out?

@Moonatik
Yep. The scene shows them writing “We Will Rock You,” with Freddie already having his trademark mustache and short hair; however, he wouldn’t adopt this look until 1980 with the album The Game and particularly the music video for “Play the Game.” In 1977, he still looked like this: longer hair, spandex leotards, and no ‘stache.

This is an easily Googleable fact, too. Hell, just watch any music video from the News of the World album, including the video for this song.

I don’t want to be too nitpicky, but what concerns me is that if they screwed up this detail, what others have they screwed up? A legitimate concern IMO, considering that we’ve seen how other biopics about musicians have failed at portraying them. (Need we forget that Andre 3000 Jimi Hendrix movie that used zero Hendrix music and portrayed the man as a violently abusive husband.)
