POLL: Best Style?

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Depends what you mean by anime. the anime style as a whole has changed significantly each decade. Each productution studio or artist can heavily affect the look, to almost the point it looks like a western cartoon. If you just mean the modern style of cell shading, eyes n stuff, then I would have to say Disney. Though, there are certain specific styles like best, like the cowboy bebop/samurai champloo/space dandy look.

Course it’s an issue with disney too, do you mean their traditional animation, or the recent 3D efforts? Funny though, the creator of Astro Boy one of the first to have the “anime” style, was directly influenced by Donald Duck and the cartoony style Disney had at the time.

Post an example of the same character in both styles please. There’s good and bad of each one, so I still don’t know what you mean.

I’m gonna have to go with Disney. The detail’s much better, and the bling’s only ridiculously oversized, not effing ridiculously oversized.

as an animator i’d have to say Disney.

Disney actually animates ACTING

while anime has heavy reliance on emoticon type actions.

Disney. Hands down.

Anime is just so stiff and rigid and hardly anything at all moves. Occasionally you’ll get a good enough action shot, but for the most part it’s unappealing to look at. Like Petey said, the only time they seem to get creative and let the animators animate is when they’re doing expressions, but that only looks out of place because everything else is so lifeless.

With Disney every little bit is animated. There’s so much movement and so much energy that it almost comes to life. Even during straightforward talking scenes where everyone’s just standing around, there’s tons of movement and a lot of emotion conveyed in just their expressions and gestures.

allow me to point you to one of my idols JAMES BAXTER

keep in mind he did this animation with nothing more than COPY PAPER and a NUMBER TWO PENCIL

a grid was provided to him. that was it.

oh and he’s age 23 in this footage.

Yeah but you’re comparing studios making stuff for either TV or for a specific manga series, with a limited budget, to a multi billion dollar conglomerate for theatrical releases. Obviously there’s not a high degree of flexibility available if you don’t have the budget to make a high amount of frames or add more dynamic lighting (but some of the bigger budgeted shows can, or some of the classic anime movies).

To say the anime style is “stiff” is a little narrow, considering like I said in my first post, styles vary drastically and budget can effect that immensely.

@Sono

you can have stiff animation but better acting choices.

Look what John K did with limited Hannah Barbara style.

All the breakdowns and acting choices in anime are the EXACT SAME. There is a reason why Miyazaki hates anime calling it Otaku fuel

No, I disagree 100%. The saturday morning cartoons done by Disney, which have the exact same time and budget constraints as the anime you’re talking about, still move with more energy and have more expression behind them. Even fan-made stuff done in flash has more energy behind it than Anime, and like Petey said, very low-budget stuff can look great.

Now for fair and balance, again like Petey said (it’s just so rare to see you seriously take part in a discussion, man), there are great anime studios like Ghibli that do the exact same thing with animation that Disney does.

I wouldn’t particular call what Miyazaki makes “anime”

To me Anime is a very specific style.

I haven’t seen any other animator draw with the level of subtlety that Miyazaki can do.

It’s rare i get to talk about the art of animation here.

I take animating very seriously.

To me it’s a tomato tomato kind of thing.
full

I even think of Avatar (Airbender, not blue cats) anime just because, even though it isn’t technically Japanese animation it’s still very clearly based on it.

(Though technically most anime comes from Korea but still…)

Serious talk though, I’ve always just used “anime” as a broad term to define any animation from Japan. Mainly because everyone else seems to; look up Ghibli on any site and it’ll be listed under the anime header.

Also because Ghibli is what made me say “Wow. There is fantastic animation in Japan.” I thought it was all Pokemon and Naruto and the QUALITY VAN (and if an animation nut like you can watch that without committing suicide, I’ll be impressed).

But less animation. It still has the rigid unmoving characters I was talking about, and PATF was hand drawn while Evangelion relied heavily on CGI for the big detailed scenes, and PATF wasn’t even trying to go for big heavily detailed scenes to begin with.

When Disney wants to do big epic detailed things, they come out with something like Atlantis whose visuals just nuked Evangelion.

I’m sorry, I thought this was just comparing visuals to visuals.

not story.

I don’t know about you, but THIS SCENE continues to grow more impactful and feels more real the older i get.

Please take note, there is BARELY any dialog in this scene and because of that it feel so real.
